The roll call vote was taken aa follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Ayala, Brozosky, and Campbell
HOES: Councilmember Hosterman
ABSENT: Mayor Pico
ABSTAIN: None

Item 4c
Aoorove Diana and sDecifications; review of bids and award of contract for Civic
Center Sionafle, Proiect No. 988029. (SR 04:179)

Mr. Brozosky believed spending $94,945.60 for signage for the Civic Center is
excessive, and he could not accept this proposal.

Ms. Ayala invited public comment and there were no speakers on this item.

Ms. Ayala concurred with Mr. Brozosky's comments. There are plans in process for
a new Civic Center and she did not want to spend that much at this time for signage.

Mr. Campbell asked for a brief staff report.

Ms. McKeehan indicated the purpose of the project was to make it easier for people
to find offices on the property. The current signage is confusing for those who visit the Civic
Center for the first time.

Mr. Brozosky did not object to the signage proposal, but rather to the cost.

Mr. Bocian indicated that one of the staff recommendations was to remove one of the
monument signs and place a monument sign in front of 123 Main Street. That is an $11,000
sign and could be deleted from the project. Another recommendation was to have two
campus (you are here) signs ($10,700) and those could be removed to save expenses. The
sign program could still work without those two elements.

Ms. Ayala referred to the City sign department as a means of saving money.

Mr. Bocian explained that the City sign department couldn't fabricate signs like the
ones proposed. These are larger aluminum signs and some are illuminated.

Mr. Campbell expressed confidence in staff and did not mind spending the proposed
amount if it would help the people who use the facilities. He wanted the Civic Center as
user friendly as possible. The campus idea will be here for a long time.

Mr. Brozosky referred to the electrical work and asked why it was so high?

Mr. Bocian said that is because of the two signs that are illuminated. There are
some costs with regard to the electronics within the signs as well as the conduit to get
electricity to the signs. Staff can review the proposal and make reductions before returning
the plan to Council. This is a good sign program and the consultant feels the property is
undersigned.

Ms. Ayala asked staff to come back with a less costly program.

Pleasanton City Council 8 09/21/04
Minutes
