was in how people would arrive, and the cost associated with attending the water slide
facilities. She mentioned the number of problems her family has every summer with
people parking in her neighborhood and hopping over the fence into the creek. She
believed this would present a huge problem if the water park was expanded because
visitors to the water park would continue to use her property as an entrance way into the
creek to the water slide facilities.

Monica Synder, 3549 Ballantyne Drive, spoke in favor of the expansion of the
water park facilities, as it would be provide children and youth a place to go to during the
SUlIlmer.

Anna Currin, 2764 Hartley Gate Court, said this issue has been the most
contentious issue in her five years as a member of the Youth Commission. Two years
ago, the Youth Commission received a presentation on the water park expansion. The
Youth Commission was told that if the expansion were approved, the youth in the
community would be given two acres for a BMX Park, which would be adjacent to the
water park. She pointed out that the Youth Commission has heavily endorsed a BMX
Park. At the Commission's meeting last month, it was explained that two parks were
joined together and it was the Commission's chance to get a BMX Park for the youth of
this community. She was disappointed at how the Youth Commission's views were
being portrayed at the March 16 council meeting. In its meeting two weeks ago, the
Youth Commission was severely split on the issue of the water park. She noted that a
number of the Youth Commissioners believed this project would bring more harm than
good to the community. The water park is too expensive for teens to use, as a hang out on
a regular basis, and in this way, the expansion of the water park does not meet the goals
of the Youth Master Plan. She believed several members of the Youth Commission
voted in favor of the project to basically ensure the building of the BMX Park. A
community BMX Park is being held hostage by a mammoth water park project. From
what she has heard, many constituents are strongly against the water park. She was
certain that there is another avenue to pursue for the BMX Park. With the addition of the
Ikea store in Dublin, she believed Santa Rita Road and 1-580/I-680 infrastructures would
be heavily impacted on the weekends by traffic. She wanted Council to continue to
embrace a dialogue in this matter, as Pleasanton has had a history of its citizens fervently
participating in planned progress. Although she is a member of the Youth Commission,
as a citizen, she urged Council to reject the present plans for the water park.

Michelle Combs, 3658 Reflections Drive, believed expanding the water slide park
was a good idea. The weather in the summer is perfect for water recreation activities.
The location to expand the water park is good because the existing water slides are
already located there, and public transportation would be available. She believed many
of the visitors of the water park would use BART and public transportation to get to and
from the water park, which would help alleviate traffic. Although she is not a current
patron of the water slide facilities, she said that she would go if the water park were
expanded. She believed the public schools in the community would benefit from the
expansion of the water park as students would be able to stay in the community and go to

Pleasanton City Council 3 03/23/04
Minutes
