MEETiNG OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Under the Consent Calendar portion of the agenda, Mayor Pico mentioned that <br />Council proclaimed October 18, 2003 "Make A Difference" Day and urged ail citizens to <br />attend the festival on Saturday, October 18 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Pleasanton <br />Library to learn how we can collectively make the community a better place in which to <br />learn and work. Council also proclaimed October 20-25, 2003 as "World Population <br />Awareness" Week and he urged citizens to conserve water whenever possible and reflect <br />on ways to ensure adequate and safe water supplies for future generations. October 6-10, <br />2003 was proclaimed as "Walk to School" Week, and October 7 and 8 "Walk to School" <br />Days. He called upon all students and parents to join in the effort to make our <br />community a healthier place to live. Commendations were also approved by Council to <br />certify Green Businesses within the City of Pleasanton. <br /> <br /> Pamela Evans, Alameda County Green Business Coordinator, acknowledged the <br />successful parmership amongst the City, the Green Business Program and the certified <br />businesses that were recognized. The City has contributed funds and has promoted the <br />program to the public and businesses in Pleasanton and has participated on the Green <br />Business Certification Team. The businesses are models of environmental leadership to <br />their colleagues. The City of Pleasanton stands out by having one of the first government <br />facilities in the Bay Area. The City's Fleet Maintenance Facility is designed and run with <br />efficiency resource conservation and pollution prevention in mind. Pleasanton is also <br />home to a diverse area of other certified Green Businesses some of which have been <br />certified since 1998. Five auto repair shops, a printer and two more recently certified <br />businesses, the Wyndham Garden Hotel and the Meritage Group, are being commended. <br />She pointed out that the Meritage Group is the first packaging design firm to be certified <br />in the entire Bay Area. These businesses go the extra mile to divert waste from our land <br />fills, to conserve water, and save energy, and to keep our air clean. <br /> <br /> Gail Galpin mentioned the City has been partners with the Alameda County <br />Green Business Program since 1996. The goals of the program are to encourage <br />environmentaily responsible behavior, to raise public awareness and use of Green <br />Businesses and also to increase cooperation and coordination among regulatory and <br />resource conservation agencies. Local businesses undergo a very thorough and lengthy <br />evaluation to become a Certified Green Business, and receive a logo to display for the <br />customers and the public.
