neighbors were getting a wrong impression of what he was proposing and shared his plans with
the neighborhood. Many supported his addition and he has fifty signatures on a petition in
support of his project. He showed a few slides about his project demonstrating the design and
architectural appearance of his home aider the addition. He related how his family has grown
and why they bought the house in Old Towne. It was their intent from the beginning to enlarge
the house. Fie said he has tried to work with the Diazes since the first meeting with their
architect.

Ms. Hosterman said the plan is lovely and would be an addition to the neighborhood and
not a detraction. She asked what was the decrease in distance between the Crofton and Diaz
homes?

Mr. Crofton said the side wall is about thirteen feet closer.

Valerie Skowron, 677 Abbie Street, felt that many times it is the people against
something who are heard from the most. She wanted Council to hear those in support of the
Crofton's addition. She noted the lots in Old Towne are huge compared to the rest of
Pleasanton. Each Old Towne lot could hold one and half to two houses. She did not feel there
was a problem in the neighborhood due to the Crofton's application. She believed Council asked
for input fi'om the neighborhood in addition to considering the zoning laws, because it wanted to
know how the neighbors felt about an application. The Crofton plan is reasonable, has been
approved by the Planning Commission, and is acceptable to the neighborhood. She did not want
one person to be able to stop the application.

Martin Miller 4754 Peaceful Lane, said he lives directly across the street from the
proposed addition. His home has an addition so it is now about 3,500 sq. f~. The home behind
him is about 4,000 sq. ft. The Crofton's addition is within a reasonable size of what has been
done in Old Towne. They have worked with the Planning Department to develop mitigations,
like adding trees. All the lots in the development have a parklike setting and a few more trees
will just add to that and would block any possible invasion of privacy issues. He was very
supportive of the project and felt it was a really nice addition. He disputed the Diaz table on
square footage of homes in the area.

Deb Covert, 4895 Cobbler Court, supported the Crofton application. She believed most
people on Peaceful Lane have upgraded their homes or redone the landscaping. It makes the
value of the homes better. All her neighbors have done additions. She did not feel this was
similar to what happened in Willow Glen, where people bought small homes and made them
very big. The Old Towne development is not made up of entry level homes. She has the same
model the Croftons have and she added a single-story addition, but she wished she had done a
two-story addition.

Wayne Couto, 302 Kottinger Drive, said he knows the Diazes and know the difficulty
this process has caused them. The only compromise he has heard was to change a roof line or to
add a window or take a window out. The compromise that would make sense is for a one-story
addition. He asked that they do what is fight for everyone. He said the Diazes are older and
have worked in this town for many years. On the other side of the issue are young, affluent

Pleasanton City Council 17
Minutes

07/15/03
