Item 6c
Selection of name for Municipal Golf Course (SR 03:179)

James W. Wolfe presented the staff report.

Mayor Pico invited public comment on this item.

Jerry Wagner, 6344 Alisal Street, expressed his doubts that this golf course would ever
open and if it did he felt the City and staff should not be proud of it. He believed the City had
taken advantage of the Happy Valley residents and caused them to lose their rural atmosphere,
made their country roads unsafe, and in his opinion contaminated their water supply. He
presented his list of names for the golf course.

Kurt Kummer, 4412 Clovewood Lane, believed the golf course will be beautiful and
most residents will enjoy it. He said he had never heard of the Callippe butterfly, but he believed
it would be a very good logo for the course and noted a golf course in Hawaii uses that logo to
good advantage. He would like something at the course named after Randy Lum.

Ms. Ayala believed people would have difficulty with the name Callippe. She agreed the
butterfly would be good to use as the logo, but preferred to have the course named Happy Valley
Golf Course. She felt the name should be something people can pronounce and remember. She
also felt Pleasanton should be part of the name.

Mr. Wolfe indicated the committee members had discussed the name with golfers and all
acknowledged the name initially sounded odd. But the more people talked about it and realized
the mitigation efforts that were done and the establishment of the habitat, the more the name
seemed fight.

Mr. Campbell agreed with the initial reaction, but the more he thought about it, the more
he loved the name. The name of the course should be intriguing, elegant and graceful.
Pleasanton Municipal Golf Course makes the course seem very average. A catchy name makes
the course more marketable. He believed golfers were environmentalists at heart and would
appreciate the preservation of the endangered species.

Ms. Hosterman also liked the name Callippe. She agreed that people in Pleasanton will
probably still refer to the course as the Happy Valley golf course. However, she liked the idea of
having a catchy name that is elegant. It acknowledges the silver spot butterfly is indigenous to
the area and efforts have been made to preserve its habitat. She felt Callippe was a pretty name
and she wanted to support the efforts of the golf course committee and to recognize the time and
thought invested. She acknowledged that there had been some outreach to the community to get
a potential name for the site.

Mr. Brozosky acknowledged the initial difficulty pronouncing the name, but pointed out
Pleasanton will have a street named Tulancingo soon, so the residents are used to difficult
names. He wanted to recognize Happy Valley as well, however, the logo will look very nice.

Pleasanton City Council 10
Minutes

06/17/03
