spearheaded the campaign and have contacted Linda Patterson to coordinate this effort.
The 101st Airborne is a C-company of the 256th Support Battalion and has made a request
to ASA for adoption. The company is currently just outside Baghdad in support of the
101st, supplying logistics to elements of the 101st. This unit has already experienced a
number of casualities and is known for its actions in the invasion of Normandy and the
Battle of the Bulge during World War II. A community liaison committee will be formed
to create a letter writing campaign to have business put together "care packages" to send
to the soldiers, and have fund raisers to cover the postage to send the packages to the unit.
Information on the ASA can be obtained from the City website, or call 925-462-1871 or
925-398-8179.

Councilmember Ayala encouraged Ms. Eddy to contact David Walden,
representing the Chamber of Commerce, who was sitting in the audience. The Chamber
is involved with putting the yellow ribbons on Main Street in honor of the Pleasanton
men and women serving overseas.

Kristin Ekvall, 1155 Innsbmck Street, Livermore, also supporting the overseas
troops, spoke on behalf of the Operation Mom program. Its website is
www.operationmom.org. This organization was formed just after 9/11 as a military
support group, supporting all of the branches of the military. Operation Mom started out
very small, but in the last four months, with 200,000 men and women being deployed,
has grown. Ms. Ekvall represents the Tri-Valley group of the organization, meeting the
second Monday of each month at Trinity Baptist Church in Livermore. They plan to send
packages to the troops, providing them with much needed supplies such as envelopes and
q-tips. They are working with various veterans groups and military chaplains to
distribute the packages. One box will provide items from home to about 7 soldiers. The
contact number is 443-7841.

Mayor Pico encouraged her to discuss with staff a proclamation from the City in
support of this program

Marilyn Carter, 1692 Rutgers Way, Livermore, representing Operation Mom, said
there were many different avenues available to help the military. America Supporting
Americans and Operation Mom are two outstanding programs and she felt there was
room for more to address the needs of the community. She showed a display of items as
an example of what is being sent to the overseas troops.

Paulette Salisbury, 6170 Corte Trancas, representing Save Our Rights commented
on some of the actions the Federal government could undertake under the U.S.A. Patriot
Act. She recalled the same type of actions taking in the recent past. The Patriot Act was
designed to expose both foreign and domestic terrorists. She felt the broad new
definition of crime actually threatens to criminalize political activities, stifle dissent and
create dossiers on anyone who disagrees with the government. She felt Americans must
take notice of these infringements on their civil rights. She asked council to stand in
solidarity with them in the protection of the Bill of Rights, freedom and democracy.
Their website is www.nowwatchthis.com/savor or phone her at 484.5495.

Pleasanton City Council 5 04/01/03
Minutes
