will ~ive you a radar device. You and one of your neighbors can go out and take some
readings and mail letters and the City will provide a handout that can circulate in the
neighborhood. Ninety-eight percent of those calls requesting service, when presented
that option, do not avail themselves of it. It is a problem they would like solved, but not
worth their time to spend a couple of hours on it. He thought Council would find even as
little as $50 to $100 per household may discourage a desire to do a lot of the physical
work.

Ms. Ayaia asked if the cost was $75,000 per traffic circle.

Mr. van Oelder said it was closer to $30,000. Three lraffic circles were done for
just under $75,000.

Ms. Ayala made a motion asking staffto do a review of the subject stop sign.

Ms. MicheloRi would like the alternative of having a survey. This would get
some initial feedback as to whether residents want it removed entirely or would they want
it removed and replaced with some type of device. It is a second to the motion, if
amended this way.

Ms. Ayala said this was okay as long as the people understood that they would be
payin~ a portion of that. She would be fine with that.

Ms. Michelotti said that in the initial study she would like to see the question
presented if they feel the stop sign is not necessary at all, or would they like to see some
type of calming device as a solution and not cloud it with "if it is paid for" or "not paid
for." It is a safety issue whether they think removing it would be okay. If they are going
to do a questionnaire, then let's get all of the alternatives. Maybe the questionnaire
should put as a third alternative "would you be willing to pay 10% of whatever." Then
you have all of the facts.

Ms. Dennis said there is also an opportunity if there is a future development on
the Busch Property. If that development has access onto that road, they could also pay
for the circles, if people wanted it. It is not necessarily true that the residents would have
to pay for it if they are willing to wait for the other option to take place. She would be
interested in knowing the answer to the question, since it is really part of this project and
since the stop sign was part of the whole traffic calming experiment.

Ms. Ayala asked if someone was going to make a motion to accept the report
where people will have to pay for the traffic circles.

Ms. Michelotti said yes and there are two different things going. One is that we
review this particular stop sign since it was to be temporary.

Ms. Ayala said that is all she really wants to do.

Pleasanton City Council 29
Minu~es

07/17/01
