MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Fire Chief Stewart Gary said it makes public safety's jobs so much easier when
there are great citizens like Ms. White and Mr. Afamasaga who see something going
wrong and step in and take charge. Early in the morning of April 15, 2001, Ms. White
was working her job in a Pleasanton neighborhood and saw smoke pouring from a
ehiraney at 4:45 a.m. She was alert enough to say, "Something is wrong". She not only
called 911, she also evacuated the residents next door to the house that was on fire. By
the time the fire department arrived, the smoke was so low, the fire deparUnent couldn't
tell which of three houses was on fire. She directed in the first fire fighters. She did a
tremendous job. Chief Gary expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Department and
the City.

Mayor Pico presented the commendation on behalf of the City and its citizens.

Ms. White said that she was happy that no one was in the home that was on fire.
She said she was very concerned about that. When she and her husband went back and
found no one there, it was a real relief. She said she appreciated the recognition and
thanked the Council.

Chief Gary thanked Mr. Afamasaga on behalf of the Department. At 5.06 p.m. on
May 6 at the Vista Del Sol Apashnent Complex a young boy had fallen into the
swimming pool and was under water for a period of time. Bob helped mm around what
could have been a profound tragedy. Mr. Afamasaga, without second thoughts, reacted,
jumped in and got the boy out and started the emergency measures, called for 911, did
everything the department expects of a bystander when an emergency happens. Chief
Gary thanked him on behalf of the community and the department for a great job.

Pleasanton City Council 4 06/19/01
Minutes
