Sarah Rochman, Youth Commissioner, was present to be sworn in. <br /> <br /> Laura Wheatman, Youth Commissioner, was present for the swearing in <br />ceremony. <br /> <br /> Libby Kolher, Adult Alternate Youth Commissioner, said she was thankful for the <br />appointment and is looking forward to working with this dynamic group of future leaders. <br /> <br />Marsha Schmiegel, Deputy City Clerk, administered the oath of office. <br /> <br /> Mayor Pico said Pleasanton was very fortunate as a community to have so many <br />people willing to volunteer and participate. He welcomed the new and reappointed <br />commissioners and challenged them to represent the City Council and the citizens of <br />Pleasanton well. <br /> <br />5. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> <br />Mr. Pico recognized the outgoing Poet Laureate, Charlene Villella. <br /> <br /> Ms. Villella thanked the City for being so forward thinking and for stepping out <br />into the forefront and appointing a Poet Laureate. She noted that the City of Pleasanton <br />was even ahead of San Francisco. It is very important to recognize the necessity of <br />culture in a community and for the health of a community. She thanked the City Council <br />for the opportunity of being the first. <br /> <br /> Poet Laureate Jim Ott was introduced and shared a poem created last week during <br />his visit to Ms. Mary Redding's third grade class at Mohr Elementary School. He <br />worked with the students and put some images of Pleasanton together, including poetry <br />rhythm, for creating a poem in honor of National Poetry Month. <br /> <br />Students Melissa Ott and Almandine De Noix read the following: <br /> <br />Pleasanton Is <br />A nice car and peaceful place where people are friendly and where sunshine <br />brings hot cocoa and bagels to hungry citizens <br />Our schools where students read and learn, our parks where sand and soccer and <br />softball and baseball come alive in the hands and arms and legs of children <br />Our history with names like John Kottinger, Bernal and the Rose Hotel, being <br />together with our families in our library and churches and shops and restaurants <br />The arch over Main Street, our museum, our farmers market where heaps of fruits <br />and vegetables greet Saturday citizens and where Twee-Twee the clown makes <br />animals out of balloons for children. <br />Kids catching tadpoles at concerts in the park, new homes where families share <br />dreams with neighbors <br />And evenings where after homework thousands of kids brush their teeth before <br />going off to bed to dream of tomorrow in Pleasanton. <br /> <br />Pleasanton City Council 6 04/17/01 <br />Minutes <br /> <br /> <br />
