Phil Graft, Village High School, who had shadowed Gary Smith, Director of
Building Inspections, asked what the latest plans were for a BMX park?

James W. Wolfe indicated staff had been reviewing several parcels of land for this
project. The focus is now on the most eastern part of Shadow Cliffs Park. Several
discussions have been held with representatives of the East Bay Regional Park District
who agree this is a possibility. Plans will prepared to be submitted to the Park District for
review.

Pat Murray, 4470 Mirador Drive, expressed her concerns about traffic on Bernal
Avenue near Valley Avenue and the 1-680 on-ramp. She indicated that another city had
solved its cut-through traffic problems by slowing the traffic signals to make it
uncomfortable for cut-through traffic. She requested Council to install a no right turn on
red at Valley and Bemal and at the Koll Business Park. She cited a recent traffic incident
and felt these intersections had very hazardous conditions. She was concerned that when
the Bemal property is developed the traffic will only get worse.

Judy Symcox, 1450 Groth Circle, also had concerns about traffic, but on the other
side of town on Valley Avenue between Bemal Avenue and Santa Rita Road. When she
first moved to town, the plans were to have an interchange at West Las Positas Boulevard
and it would be the cross-town connector. Later the plan was to extend Stoneridge Drive,
but this keeps getting delayed for one reason or another and Pleasanton continues to
grow. She did not believe Valley was an adequate east/west connector and is currently at
a crisis point. She also pointed there were pollution problems because of cars sitting in
traffic on Valley Avenue. She urged Council to proceed with the extension of Stoneridge
Drive.

Dorothea Susman, 1462 Groth Circle, also expressed concerns about traffic on
Valley Avenue and also urged extension of Stoneridge Drive.

Mayor Pico thanked the students for participating in the Youth in Government
Program and urged them to continue to participate actively in the community.

There was a break at 7:45 p.m.

The meeting reconvened at 7:47 p.m.

Pleasanton City Council 5 03/06/01
Minutes
