Alex Watson, 5991 Corte Arboles, believed there were a lot of people interested
in the golf course. People have been interested in the golf course since the Happy Valley
course, which was abandoned. The next possible location was part of the San Francisco
proposal and that is now gone. Now Council is saying the best we can do is a nine-hole
course. He guessed he should be happy with that, but the point is a golf course is
important to the community. One of the main objectives for this land is to preserve open
space and a golf course would help with that objective.

Mayor Tarver indicated the City has not given up on the Happy Valley golf
course. The issue is how to proceed through the permitting process, Staff is continuing
to pursue lhe golf course and it is not dead.

Ms. Acosta further explained that the City had asked the builders to fund some of
the permitting costs. One builder is funding the process on a step by step basis. The City
staff is continuing to work with the permitting agencies.

Mayor Tarver agreed that the community needs a golf course. It is a question of
where and how.

Mr. Watson indicated he wanted an 18-hole course and did not want to lose this
opportunity. He suggested getting the participation of another entity.

Mr. Pico explained that the City is trying to maintain the flexibility to do that. A
nine-hole course could be on the western parcel and another nine holes could be located
on the central parcel. He just wanted to keep the options open.

Ms. Dennis clarified that the previous proposal on the Bcrnal property was for a
private 18-hole course that was open to the public. That was the kind of partnership Mr.
Watson was suggesting.

Ms. Ayala confirmed that she hears comments daily about the need for a golf

Mr. Costanzo expressed his appreciation for those who took the time to comment
on the proposal and provided responses m various points raised. In response to Ms.
Bangtson's question about what is a minor modification, he explained his intent was to
minimize timing. He was willing to meet with the golf course consultant to see what
would make a better course within the next couple of weeks. He will commit to
modifications, but did not want to spend two months. Other comments were mostly
about housing. He stated Greenbriar would be willing to build more housing, but that
was not the public decision at this point. He agreed with every staff recommendation
except #16 regarding the number of traffic calming circles.

Ms, Michelotti inquired about the school impact fee payment and timing.

Pleasanton City Council 14 08/21/00
Minutes
