Approve participation in anticus curiae brief in support of the County- of Sonoma
concerning the Education Revenue Augmentation Fund's shiPt of local agency's
property tax revenues to fund education. (SR00:168)

Robert Cordtz, 262 W. Angcla, Pleasanton, urged the Council to not vote in favor
of Item 4k. Mr. Cordtz believed that Council is singling out one organization and felt
that this was unfair. Many civic and religious organizations have contributed to the ~vell
being of Pleasanton. The City is already in the middle of a study costing $150,000 to
$200,000. There has been a committee in place to do this for two years and this
cormmittee has already looked at changing the name and voted it down. Citizens have
approached the Park and Recreation Cormnission to get approval, and the vote was 3 - 2
against the idea. He suggested waiting for the completion of the Downtown Specific
Plan. The future is not predictable concerning whether or not this park is going to be
eliminated. He hoped that Council would vote to wait until the Specific Plan is finalized
and these things would be ironed out at that time.

Roger McLain, 1787 Beachwood Way, Plcasanton, spoke on behalf of Item 4k.
He was bothered by the fact that, without saying anything to the Lions Club or their
efti~n, the information just presented for not changing the park name's was incorrect. He
was bothered because their comments were brought forth at such a late time. He stated
lhta he is on the Downtown Specific Plan Committee and has worked hard to evaluate the
railroad options that were presented on the area. The Park and Recreation Commission
has evaluated the request to change the name. He has looked at the records and Wayside
Park was never nanred as such by the Council. It became known as Wayside Park as a
directive of where to go. When DeLuca and Wayside Parks were created, the
Policeman's Association asked if one of the parks could be named for one of
Pleasanton's first Police Chiefs. The City Council then formally named the park DeLuca,
but nothing was done with what is known as Wayside, The Lions Club created the parks.
Consequently, after the parks were established, the City decided to buy the property for
the small sum of $400,000. The Lions Club ~vants recognition lbr what it has done in the
community and, more importantly, the name Lions is importm~t so that people know that
the club exist and where they can come for certain types of help.

Ms. Michelotti stated that the l,ions were originally instrumental in securing the
park land.

There were no further comments from the public.

It was moved by Ms. Miehelottl, seconded by Mr. Pieo, that the Consent
Items be approved.

Pleasunion City Council 4 06/20/00
Minutes
