Mr. Cox said the next point he wanted to emphasize is the issue of painting the
trim area. Staff denied this to him because it was said that it would break up the
uniformity of the building's paint job. (IVlr. Cox presented pictures of several complexes
that are immediately next to them.) He pointed out three buildings in the area with non-
uniform paint jobs. One is on either side of us and mainly wc are looking at the trim.
The trim has been painted on the Big O building, just basically on the front and not on the
sides, so it is an incomplete and non-uniform to the whole building. There is public
storage area where they used a multi-colored band for the first 50 to 60 feet and then the
remainder of the building has been allowed to remain the same coloring.

Lastly, Mr. Cox described the building next door, Rynick Tires. He said that this
has been allowed exceptional mount of signage as well as establishing the visible
presence through their main product line and logo colors program. This has been boldly
painted onto the building. Essentially it looks like a big logo for Goodyear Tires. This
paint job is not complete all the way around the building. It has a different paint job in
the front and back; it has different colors for each side of the building. The side l~.cing
our parking lot is white, the side facing Stanley Boulevard is a light gray, and there is no
standard trim line anywhere on the building. It is completely devoid of any uniformity at
all. This sits directly next door to our building, ~vhich, if we painted the l~ont of our
building a difli:rent color on the trim, would break up our uniformity.

One final point Mr. Cox noted was that them are inconsistencies throughout.
When he moved into the building, a section of the building which faces oar parking lot
had two windows which had not been painted. Those two windows were not painted for
some time. They ~vere completely in the view for every customer who entered our
parking lot. When he moved in he asked lbr them to be painted. It would seem to be all
right for customers to view an unfinished wall of the tenants of our building, but it is not
possible to have two different colors on the same building, as trim goes.

Mr. Cox said he had a lot more to present, and he felt disadvantaged as ~:ar as
presenting what he really would like to present, because there is much much more to this
situation. He is hoping that everyone received all of the packages submitted and a letter
from the past tenant, outlining his reasons of why he essentially failed at that location,
which he attributed directly to signage.

Mr. Cox thanked Council for their time and apologized tbr the length.

Laurence Dorn, 8027 Canyon Creek Circle, Pleasanton, explained that he is an 8-
month resident in Pleasanton and finds it a fine place to live. He is a retired real estate
broker from Santa Rosa, California. He was involved in the leasing of commercial
properties, both in downtown Santa Rosa and in downtown Petaiuma. In addition, his
wife and he ran, in conjunction with his other businesses, an antique store in downtown
Petaluma. This was the first Antique Mall in downtown Petalurea, very close to the
antique mall type of concept that Mr. Cox has here. About six years ago, he left
Calilbmia, and moved to Minnesota. He lived in Prarie, Minnesota. Prior to moving
back here, he was a menther of the Greater Pra~e Planning Commission. It has bccn

Pleasanton City Council 24 06/20/00
Minutes
