Department and the Planning Commission both stated that a monument sign should have
the name like Olde Towne Antiques Plaza or Center. However, none of these businesses
are retail sales related. He is the only one. There is a carpenter shop, strictly wholesale
distribution center for discontinued products, a towing service, and two auto repair shops.
In short, none of them really blend with his type of business and to put up a monument
sign with all of the names on it would not do the area justice. Calling it some type of
anlique plaza would not work very well. He believes a single monument sign allowed for
just his business would be appropriate. There arc examples of this in the area of single
monument signs, two of which, Big O and Rynick Tires, both have other tenants in their
building and they have single monument signs.

M3. Cox discussed his proposal for signage. First he pointed out the architectural
features of his section of the building. He noted that he has a lot of glass frontage and
also has a wall at the bottom and up on the sides along with different places which have
stone inlaid into the facade of the building. They have architectural features at the top and
have a lower ceiling than the rest of the complex, which ends raising it to the full height
of the rest of the complex. There are several different comers, nooks and crannies, there
is an alcove which is a front entrance way, etc. It is quite a bit different than the rest of
the complex. The complex is void of any architectural design. It is basically a
windowless box as well as being completely surrounded by other buildings that afibrd
little or not visibility to California and less to Stanley. What he is trying to say is that we
have two separate and distinct sections to this building. The first section being ours,
certainly shows itself as being some type of retail store, center, or whatever, and has been
used that way in the past, ever since it was designed. The remainder of the complex
houses service orientated businesses mostly. There is a carpentry shop in the back, but
again, there are two totally distinct parts of this building. This shows that our section of
the complex is a retail section and deserves a greater percentage of the signage. The
owners of the complex are present tonight mid are in agreement with the percentage of
the sigtmge we have requested for the section that we occupy.

Mr. Cox pointed out that signs 6, 7, 9 and 10 on his exhibit are all basicaily the
same and they carry the words "Antiques". They are outlined with numbers on the map
and wbere they would be placed on the building. They would also carry the words "Olde
Tome" in a banner ribbon, which is his trademark design. Number 8, which would go
over the entranceway, is a sign that would carry the flail name of the business, along with
the business logo trademark and some general information about the business.
Infbrmation on it would be considerably smaller. It would be designed to be seen
primarily by the customers entering the store from the parking area. It is being put up
within the alcove section of the front of the store, making it readable primarily by only
the store patrons and has a small amount of visibility to the fi'ont of Stanley, but it really
is for customers coming in to give them more information about the store. As such, tiffs
sign might be considered exempt, because it is intended tbr reading or viewing from just
the inside boundaries of the site. If need be, we could move it to a lower point on the
building or whatever, to help accommodate this particular usage.

Pleasanton City Council 23 06/20/00
Minutes
