Ms. Dennis was surprised there was no notice of the change and asked staff about
the process.

Mr. Swift said the process on the bam is different than the one for the house or
second unit. Mr. Chestnut was renovating an existing structure, which does not require
administrative design review or any notice to the neighbors, only a building permit.
Because the barn was being processed at the same time all the other discussions were being
held in the neighborhood, and the neighbors indicated they wanted it to continue to look the
same, staff told Mr. Chestnut that it should look as close to its original appearance as
possible. It could not be exact because it had deteriorated too much. The original plan was
to replace the metal roof with another metal roof. When the shake was fonnd undemeath,
staff agreed to replacing the metal with shake because it was more in keeping with the
original style of the bam.

Ms. Michelotti asked if the new redwood on the side of the bam would be distressed
to look like the older wood.

Mr. Chestnut said it would be and described the techniques.

Ms. Michelotti referred to all the written material Council has received in addition to
public testimony. She asked if the upper level of the barn would be used for storage and
whether the opening from front to back was changed.

Mr. Chestnut said the upper level was storage. The opening on the upper level was
on the plan and the same as the original. It was a window, not louvers.

Ms. Michelotti asked what the plans for usage on the lower left side were.

Mr. Chestnut said that had not been determined. It would be an open room that
could be a potting shed or a pool table area, but would not be living quarters.

Ms. Michelotti referred to the balcony on the back side of the house and suggested
he reconsider the deck covering.

Ms. Dennis asked abom the window in the from of the barn and the requiremere for
screening trees. What was planted are not trees.

Mr. Chestnut said Mr. Knapp did not want it, bm he would put it back in if the
Planning Department felt it was necessary. He believed he was to plant wax privet bushes.
He did not know that a standard privet was a tree. He asked Mr. Ciesielski if he would
prefer trees, was told yes, and then bought Japanese maples at a cost of $700. Steve Otto of
the Planning Department said that was not acceptable. Mr. Chestnut said he would put in
the standard privets before completion of the bungalow. He noted there is a 15 foot lilac
bush in place now.

Pleasanton City Council 14 03/07/00
Minutes
