MEMORANDUM
October 31, 1994
Page Three

We wanted to have fun.
Yes, everyone had a great time. All of the projects became labors of love.
I should take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the news media.
The Tri-Valley Herald, the Valley Times, The Independent, Channel 30,
KNBR-Radio 68, KPIX-Channel 5, KKIQ and Viacorn were all supportive
and very contributory. Their participation was essential to our success.
Please allow me to pay special tribute to Mark Shawver, the local graphic
artist who created our fun logo that adorned the shirts, street banners and
almost every news article.

Two Centennial projects - the Arroyo Creek Trail Run/Walk and the
Chamber of Commerce New Year's Eve Party - will be perpetuated.

We wanted to be ~scally responsible.
We were! The Centennial Celebration is the third consecutive city-wide
celebration (Fiesta 75 and American Bicentennial) that has repaid the City
Council 100% of the seed money funded by Council. Local businesses
contributed $40,000 to sponsor the Birthday Party on June 18-19. Local
businesses and families contributed $42,000 to sponsor the civic art
project.

Thirty-five local non-profit organizations participated in the Birthday Party weekend,
providing food, beverages and services. They raised $41,300 for their own purposes
and contributed an additional $13,000 to the Centennial. Ten thousand dollars of their
contribL~ti.~ns will soon be returned to them for their own worthy projects.

The Tri-Valley Community Fund granted us $1,800 to sponsor the writing of a
curriculum on Pleasanton history for the schools. That grant has been returned to
them. The $1,785 raised by participants in Centennial Sillies will be contributed back to
them.

The Centennial Celebration is essentially concluded. You may be assured, however,
that we will see the art project and sidewalk~ignettes completed.

Thank you for allowing me the honor of chairing the Centennial Celebration. Please
give credit where it is due - to the Centennial Steering Committee, hundreds of
volunteers and the City staff.
