MEMORANDUM

To:

From:

Date:

Re:

Pleasanton City Council
Deborah Acosta, City Manager
Susan Rossi, Finance Director

B~ad Hirst, Chair
Pleasanton Centennial Celebration

October 31, 1994

Final Report - Centennial Celebration

The Centennial Celebration is essentially concluded, with the exception of completing
the civic art project and the creation/installation of the sidewalk vignettes. The
Centennial was the city's, but the celebration was the community's. Please let me state
emphatically and up-front that the celebration idea emanated from the Mayor and City
Council in 1990 and has continued every day for four years. Your enthusiastic support
has been evident, noticed by the entire community and greatly appreciated by all of us
'who v'orked cn the Celebration.

The wholehearted support and participation by your City Manager, her Executive
Assistant, Public Works Director, City Engineer, Director of Parks and Community
Services, Chief of Police, Fire Chief, Superintendent of Parks, Superintendent of
Streets, and their entire staffs were essential to the success of the Celebration.

At the November 1st Council meeting, it will be my pleasure to return $50,000 that you
funded for Celebration seed money. There is-one understanding and one
recommendation that accompanies the $50,000. The understanding is that, should
William Granizo not be able to complete the art project, the Centennial Celebration has
access to an amount necessary for another artist to complete the project. Your City
Manager once suggested that the money could be held in trust until the art project was
completed. The recommendation, assuming completion of the art project as originally
designed, is that you allocate the $50,000 to be invested in the construction of an art
piece obelisk in Centennial Park adjacent to the Senior Center which will complete the
theme of Centennial Park.

123 Main Street Pleasanton, California 94566 (510) 484-8008
