MINUTES <br /> of <br /> THE MEETING <br /> of <br /> THE CITY COUNCIL <br /> Pleasanton, California <br /> .... May 12, 1969 <br /> <br /> CALL TO ORDER - PLEDGE TO FlAG <br /> Mayor Bernard Getton called the Regular Meeting of the City Council to order <br /> at 8:00 P.M., and then led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. <br /> <br /> ROLL CALL <br /> City Clerk Helen McCarty called the roll which is recorded as follows: <br /> Councilmen Beretlie, Rega, Reid, Spiliotoooulos and Mayor Getton were present. <br /> Mr. Fales, City Manager, Mr. Edgar, Assistant City Manager, Mr. Hirst, City <br /> Attorney, Mr. Campbell, Director of Public Works, and Mr. Castro, Director of <br /> Planning, were present. <br /> <br /> AGENDA AMENDMENTS <br /> Mr. Fales requested that a report from the City Attorney recommending an <br /> amendment to Ordinance No. 526, adding vehicle code sections to cover illegal <br /> parking be included under Reports of the City Attorney. <br /> <br /> CONSENT CALENDAR <br /> It was moved by Councilman Beretlie and seconded by Councilman Spiliotopoulos <br /> that the following items listed on the Consent Calendar, be approved. <br /> <br /> 1. Adoption of Resolution No. 69-98, authorizing Progress Payment No. 7, in the <br /> amount of $22,299.39, to Western Empire Construction Company, for work com- <br /> pleted on the Pleasanton Main Fire Station. <br /> <br /> 2. Adoption of Resolution No. 69-99, authorizing the City officers to execute <br /> the Improvement Agreement for a 12-unit apartment development at 852 Division <br /> Street, with Charles and Barbara Lehmann and Wendell W. and Patricia Allison. <br /> <br /> 3. Approval of the City Council Minutes of the meetings of April 7th, 14th, 21st, <br /> and 28th, 1969. <br /> <br /> The roll call vote was as follows: <br /> AYES: Councilmen Beretlie, Rega, Reid, Spiliotopoulos and Mayor Getton <br /> NOES: None <br /> ABSENT: None <br /> <br /> PUBLIC HEARINGS <br /> Application of the Planning Commission to amend City Ordinance No. 520 to prohibit <br /> A-BOard S!~ps <br /> Mayor Getton turned the meeting over to Vice-Mayor SDiliotopoulos and took a <br /> seat in the audience as a private citizen because of a conflict of interest in <br /> the above issue. Councilman Beratlis also because of a conflict of interest, <br /> abandoned his seat at the Council table and declared himself a private citizen. <br /> Vice-Mayor Splliotopoulos declared the public hearing open. <br /> Mr. Castro stated that the Planning Commission initiated this amendment to <br /> Ordinance No. 520 in the interest of good signing and felt "A-Board" signs were <br /> inconsistent with this objective. Mr. Castro also stated that the '~-Board" signs <br /> used on a temporary basis to identify homes open for inspection or model homes <br />..... would not be prohibited. <br /> Mr. Bernard Getton, representing Larson and Gerton Realtors, stated that he <br /> felt the realtors were being discriminated against as the "A-Board" signs used <br /> in front of most realty offices were not offensive. Mr. Getton also stated that <br /> he felt news rack stands and other signs in town, such as temporary advertising <br /> and promotional signs, were the kinds of signs that should be prohibited. Mr. <br /> Gerton presented the Council with pictures of some of the realtors offices in <br /> Pleasanton which displayed '~-Board" signs. <br /> Mr. Chris Beretlie, representing Amador Realtors, stated that he concurred <br /> with Mr. Gerton's remarks and cited several signs in town that he thought were <br /> far more offensive than Realtors' "A-Board" signs. <br /> Mr. Victor Lund, Jr., representing the Hacienda Realty, stated that in addi- <br /> tion to the foregoing comments, a large number of people notice the realtors' <br /> "A-Board" signs and stop in the office for both information regarding the City <br /> in general and also to ask directions. <br /> <br /> <br />
