Several of the businessmen in the vicinity of St. Mary and Main Streets pro- <br />tested the proposed loss of the parking spaces on St. Mary. Mr. Dick Hunt, co- <br />owner of Jorgensen's Pharmacy, stated he had invested a considerable amount of <br />money expanding and refacing his drugstore and if these parking spaces were elimi- <br />nated, his business could suffer severely. Dr. Collins stated that the problem <br />was not the diagonal parking on St. Mary but the fact that cars are unable to <br />turn either right or left because of the heavy traffic on Main Street. He sug- <br />gested that traffic lights be installed at that intersection. <br /> Mr. Campbell explained that traffic lights would cost over $25,000. Mr. Fales <br />reported on the proposed Parking District acquisition of property on Peters Street <br />and Gas Tax funding. <br /> After considerable discussion on this matter, it was moved by Councilman Reid <br />and seconded by Councilman Beratlis that Resolution No. 69-31, accepting the staff <br />report, Revision of Certain On-Street Parking Areas, dated February 7, 1969, and <br />authorizing a change in existing on-street parking areas in the Central Business <br />District as follows: <br /> 1. Designate, by pavement marking, that area currently used as diagonal <br /> parking on the south side of Angela Street between Main Street and <br /> the Southern Pacific Railroad as parallel parking. <br /> 2. Change, by pavement marking, that area currently designated as diagonal <br /> parking on the south side of Neal Street between Main Street and the <br /> Southern Pacific Railroad as parallel parking. <br />and to continue consideration of the elimination of diagonal parking on St. Mary <br />Street west of Main Street, until April 21, 1969, pending a progress report regard.- <br />ing the installation of off-street parking in the adjacent area, be adopted. <br />The roll call vote was as follows: <br />AYES: Councilmen Beratlis, Rega, Reid and Mayor Gerton <br />NOES: Councilman Spiliotopoulos <br />ABSENT: None <br /> <br />Mayor Getton recessed the meeting at 10:20 P.M. <br /> <br />Mayor Getton reconvened the meeting at 10:40 P.M. <br /> <br />~eport of the Director of Public Works Re: Traffic Study for Valley Avenue <br /> Mr. Fales reviewed the report from the Director of Public Works, dated February <br />12, 1969, and concurred with his recommendations. <br /> It was moved by Councilman Spiliotopoulos and seconded by Councilman Beratlis <br />that Ordinance No. 548, setting the speed limit for Valley Avenue, be introduced. <br />The roll call vote was as follows: <br />AYES: Councilmen Beratlis, Rega, Reid, Spiliotopoulos and Mayor Gerton <br />NOES: None <br />ABSENT: None <br /> <br />REPORTS OF THE CITY ATTORNEY <br />Report Re: RelationshiD_.of the City. to Cable Television Franchise <br /> Mr. Hirst stated that he was not prepared to report on this matter at this <br />time and asked that this report be continued. <br /> <br />COMMUNICATIONS <br /> There were no communications read at this meeting. <br /> <br />MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL MEMBERS <br /> Councilman Spiliotopoulos complimented Mr. Campbell on the Public Works <br />Information Paper he was circulating. <br /> <br /> Councilman Beratlis asked if there was any way the City of Pleasanton could be <br />reimbursed for the salary of the police officers that are sent to help police <br />students during the college riots. Mr. Fales stated that he would check into <br />this but doubted if any reimbursement was due because of the Mutual Assistance <br />Agreement. <br /> <br />MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> No one addressed the Chair. <br /> <br />EXECUTIVE SESSION RE: APPOINTMENTS TO THE PLEASANTON HOUSING AUTHORITY <br /> Mayor Getton recessed the meeting at 11:10 P.M. to the above Executive Session. <br /> <br /> <br />
