5~yor Mercer requested staff to notify Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn tomorrow of the City <br />Council appeal on their variance. <br /> <br /> There being no further discussion, Mayor Mercer declared the public hearing <br />continued open on the appeal of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ziegler of a decision of the <br />Board of Adjustment denying a variance to Section 2-5.35 of ARticle 3, Chapter 2, <br />Title II of the Ordinance Code of the City of Pleasanton to allow the construction <br />of a room addition which would encroach into the required rear yard at their resi- <br />dence located at 6244 Robin Court, the property is zoned R-1-6500 (Single-Family <br />Residential) District; to the City Council meeting of November 25, 1980, 8:00 P.M., <br />Fairgrounds Cafeteria. <br /> <br />Appeal of Interstate Uniform Services Corporation of a decision of the Plannin~ <br />Commission denyin~ their. application for a conditional use permit which would <br />allow an addition of 2~500 s~. ft. to the existin~ nuclear laundry facility at <br />65 Ray Street. Zoning for the property is C-S (Commercial Service) District <br />(Contd. Open from 9-16-80) <br /> I.~yor Mercer stated this public hearing had been continued open from the meeting <br />of September 16, 1980, to allow Interstate Uniform Services Corporation to present <br />additional information relative to this appeal, after which time the public hearing <br />would be continued another three weeks to allow the opponents additional time to <br />review the testimony presented at this meeting. <br /> <br /> Mr. Craig Connolly, represented Interstate Uniform Services Corporation, pre- <br />sented background information relative to this facility and stated the present <br />application. is for an addition to store cleaned clothing. He stated that the <br />Planning Commission and surrounding residents had expressed concern regarding <br />nuclear radiation. Mr. Connolly introduced consultants who would present testi- <br />mony relative to the general nature of the operation and risks to the City of <br />Pleasanton. He reiterated that the request for the building permit is for an <br />expansion to store clean clothing only. <br /> <br /> Mr. Frank Bolde, Health Physics Consultant, stated that radiation readings can <br />be misleading. He presented a Coleman lantern mantle which contains enough radia- <br />tion activity to be in violation of State regulations. He stated the Interstate <br />Laundry facility is not a hazardous operation. <br /> <br /> Discussion ensued regarding a citation received by the laundry for a filter <br />that was inadvertently placed outside. Mr. Connolly explained that the filter was <br />in a controlled area but they were cited for inappropriate disposal. Mr. Bolde <br />stated there was no danger of radiation from the cited filter to employees or any- <br />one outside of the facility. <br /> <br /> Mr. George Bakovitch, Interstate Uniform Services Corporation Health and Safety <br />Director, stated he was responsible for the operational safety of the six plants of <br />Interstate located around the country. He advised there were periodic inspections, <br />and recommendations for improvements or corrections made where needed. <br /> <br /> ~yor Mercer asked if the State had to approve this facility expansion. Mr. <br />Conholly advised they did not because there was no change in the license. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Mohr inquired about the danger of spillage. Mr. Connolly ex- <br />plained the proceHure for processing nuclear waste and advised there was no danger <br />due to spillage. Councilmember Mohr asked if Pleasanton Public Safety employees <br />were cognizant of the plant operation in case of a disaster of any kind.'
