129

Association, two representatives from the Citizens Opposed to
Redevelopment, two representatives from the Pleasanton Chamber of
Commerce, and one representative from the residential community,
preferably from walnut Drive or the area around it.

Mr. Brandes concurred with the recommendation and indicated
that in support of this, he would be willing to serve in the
Committee.

Mr. Thurmon Caudill, 47158 Augustine, noted that at last
month's meeting, a motion was made to dissolve the Redevelopment
Agency and that he felt the Council was defying the voters who
have already stated that they do not want the Redevelopment Plan.

Mr. Mercer pointed out that the item was not on last month's
Agenda, and, therefore, the Council could not vote on it. He
- added that it is now on the Agenda for consideration and will be
voted on. He emphasized that nobody is trying to get around
anything here, and, if the proposed committee's name is a problem,
it could be renamed.

Mr. Tarver indicated that the downtown Specific Plan is what
the City is trying to implement and find funding for, now that the
Redevelopment Agency was unsuccessful.

Mr. Mercer stated that he wanted to involve those interested
in helping to solve downtown problems and allow those opposed to
redevelopment to participate in the solutions. There are only five known mechanisms to do
that, and it was the task of this committee to investigate those
alternatives.

Mr. Robert Cordtz, 262 West Angela, suggested that the
committee include two representatives from the residential
- district instead of one and an owner-resident within the downtown
area. He further suggested that the Councilmember apppointed to
the committee be one who is not up for reelection and be the
committee's chairman. In support of Item 12c, he added that he
wanted to see the dissolution of Ordinance 1343 now rather than
postponing it to the August 1st meeting or bringing it up once
again at the November election. For funding improvements, he
suggested that the City look into the assessment of downtown
property owners.

Mr. Gene Finch, 8019 Jorgensen Lane, mentioned that he has
been affiliated with the Pleasanton Downtown Association for the
past 25 years and strongly supports the City's position on
redevelopment. He concurred with the suggestion that the

-19-
