137

Mr. Brandes commented that the Club's intention is admirable
but that the problem is to determine where the line is drawn
regarding which projects should or should not be supported. He
said that this project is not unique and that he is not
comfortable about contributing $35,000 to $40,000 to this project.
He added that if Council chooses to support this project, it
should be willing to support a similar contribution to Foothill
High School.

Mr. Tarver stated that from a priority standpoint, the
facility is badly needed. He indicated that the Club members have
worked hard to put the package together and that it is appropriate
for the City to help them out. He added that the City should also
assist Foothill High School if it had a similar need.

Mr. Mercer pointed out that this project is another attempt
by concerned citizens to solve a problem in the community and that
the City should support them. He added that the City should also
commit to support any similar project Foothill High School might
have.

Ms. Mohr commented that a facility like this should be
reviewed by staff to ensure that the size is appropriate, as it
did the Sports Park. She added that since the CIP budget will be
reviewed in two weeks, it would be proper for Council to consider
this then, together with the other projects in the budget.

Mr. Brandes agreed with Ms. Mohr that the project be reviewed
when Council looks at the CIP budget.

Mr. Mercer commented that the Booster Club would have more
experience regarding the size of the facility than would City
staff. He asked Ms. Bengtson how much was spent on the Sports
Park facility.

Ms. Bengtson replied that the restrooms, snack bar and
storage for the Sports Park cost $75,000.

Mr. Bird indicated that the project's architect is the same
one who did the new Middle School and that the design of the
concession was made with the students and the Club's experience
with snack bar facilities in mind. The size of the restroom
facility may vary, depending on the number of people to be served.
He added that if Foothill High School wanted to put up a similar
facility, it could use the same design and save an architectural
fee of about $25,000.

- 29 -
3-20-90
