153

Mr. Mercer asked Mr. Irby if he had discussed this matter with
Mr. Callahan and the City staff.

Mr. Irby replied that he just came up with the proposal and
has not had the opportunity to discuss it with Mr. Callahan or the
staff.

Mr. Scott Gridley, Pleasanton Lumber Company, 3878 Stanley
Boulevard, stated that the issue is moving too fast. He pointed
out that the impact of the construction on businesses would be
greater than just the day the business will be closed because
convenience is a major factor for any individual shopping anywhere.
He added that Alternative 1 would substantially cut into the
parking area, remove some parking and sign structure that were part
of the original improvements of the original property owner, and
come very close to the building structure, which would be a traffic
safety hazard. He suggested that Alternative 2 be modified to use
a similar bridge widening which would work out to everyone's
benefit.

Ms. Mohr asked Mr. Gridley how many feet he is trying to get
from this.

Mr. Gridley replied that an additional four to six feet would
preserve his fence and the second stall of his parking area.

Ms. Mohr inquired if losing a parking space would affect his
compliance with the parking code.

Mr. Gridley replied that his question to the Design Review
Board regarding the impact of the widening on his parking
requirements and the costs to be incurred to put in the required
additional parking spaces was not addressed.

Mr. Mercer referred the matter to staff.

Mr. Swift replied that moving the alignment a few feet is
possible but is not reccunmended by the Engineering Department
because it would impact the curvature of the road more than what is
shown in Alternative 2. He continued that prior to the time that
Mr. Gridley became the tenant of the lumberyard, the use permit was
granted with the understanding that the ultimate widening of
Stanley Boulevard would take the temporary parking lot placed in
front of the building and that the right-of-way was granted by that
project in conjunction with the use.

- 15 -
12-11-90
