324

Mr. Steve Salvatore, Manager of Hilton Pleasanton,
7090 Johnson .Drive, immediate past president of the Pleasanton
Convention and Visitors Bureau, reviewed the feasibility study
prepared in 1986 and the proposed funding. He requested Mr. Tom
Athenour, president of the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, to
explain the benefits of the Pleasanton Convention and Visitors
Bureau to the City.

Mr. Tom Athenour, 2197 Eileen Drive, stated that while the
Pleasanton Convention and Visitors Bureau is under the umbrella of
the Chamber of C6mmerce, the Bureau has its own Board of Directors
and funding. He added that the Bureau is the City's marketing and
promotion armand prepares and distributes over 25,000 brochures to
promote the City. He continued that the economic impact of the
Bureau should not be ignored with the recession and the declining
tax base. He urged the Council to continue its support of the
Bureau, which has booked groups until 1995, particularly since the
Transient Occupancy Tax in Pleasanton has not increased
significantly since 1989.

Ms. Patricia Maronne, Executive Director of The Center, a
non-profit organization that provides counselling and other support
services to individuals and families throughout the Tri-Valley
area, requested $12,000 from Pleasanton to support the effort of
the Family Crisis Center. She explained that the Family Crisis
Center has a viable program and has been in operation in Pleasanton
for 10 years. She added that the Center needs Pleasanton's support
this year in order to buy the time necessary to ensure its future
and that more traditional funding sources will be tapped this
coming year.

Mr. Mercer inquired if the Human Services Commission would
consider the matter and forward its recommendation to the Council.

Ms. Acosta replied that that is Staff's recommendation.

There being no further testimony, Mr. Mercer declared the
public hearing closed.

Mr. Mercer indicated that Council needs to decide on a number
of funding issues: Community Access TV at $48,000, Amador
Historical Society at $10,000, Valley CASA at $10,000, Pleasanton
Convention and Visitors Bureau at $185,000, Emergency Services
Network at $1,500, Amador Gym Backboard at $1,000, Centennial
Committee at $20,000, Library Program at $279,456, Downtown
Association at $40,100, the Family Crisis Center at $12,000, and
the City Council Chambers Chairs at $7,000.

- 28 -
7-16-91
