(SR92:13)

Charlie Howell, 3126 Montepelier Court, was opposed to the
amendment to the Ordinance. He stated that he currently has a wood
shake roof. He was concerned the decision was being driven by the
emotional aspect of the Oakland Hills tragedy. Secondly, that
Council was passing on an unnecessary cost to the cttlizens of the
community and requested that more specific information should be
given on this subject. He concluded he was also concerned that
wood roofs would be banned completely in the future. Mr. Howell
felt that although he had spoken with the Fire Chief, Fire Marshall
and the Building Inspector on this matter, he felt the decision was
not justified. .....

There was discussion about types of shake roofs and wood
treatments.

There being no further testimony, Mayor Mercer closed the
public hearing.

Ms. Scribner requested a clarification of the ratings by which
were stated in the staff report.

Fire Chief Withers'responded that there is a different test
which is conducted by Underwriters Laboratories to establish each
one of the classifications. The test is based on the quantity of
.burning material it will resist before it ignites.

Gary Nichol, Steel Roofing Manufactures Association, .--

1/7/92
10
