232

Mayor Tarver asked if the Saturn logo could be placed on a
monument type sign

Mr. Rich said that a monument sign would be too low.

There being no further testimony, Mr. Tarvet declared the
public hearing closed.

Ms. Mohr commented that each of the other car dealerships have
a similar pylon sign and this application seemed consistent with
what already exists in that area.

Ms. Scribner believed that this application is acceptable
under the rules that are currently being used and is consistent
with what has already been approved and exists. She did not
believe that Council should do anything else but deny the appeal
until the Sign Ordinance could be reviewed and/or changed.

Mr. Pico felt that the existing signs are in proximity to the
freeway and are readily visible from the freeway. This proposed
sign will be considerably further down Rosewood Drive next to the
shopping center. He felt that this sign would not be consistent
with the shopping center signs and would not be visible from the
freeway.

Mayor Tarver believed that this sign was not the same as those
along the freeway frontage. He was concerned that other businesses
in the shopping center would request a similar sign. He agreed
that perhaps the Sign Ordinance needed to be revisited. This sign
request was going beyond what is appropriate for freeway signage
for pylon signs. Mayor Tarver hoped that the Sign Ordinance would
soon be reviewed.

Ms. Mohr asked that staff report back to Council regarding
reviewing the Sign Ordinance.

Ms. Acosta agreed, now that there is a majority support on the
Council to do so.

It was moved by Ms. Mohr, and seconded by Ms. Scribner, to
deny the appeal by City Council, and approve the installation of an
individually illuminated lettered wall-mounted sign and a 17' high
pylon sign for the Saturn automobile dealership to be located at
4340 Rosewood Drive.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers Mohr and Scribner
NOES: Councilmember Pico and Mayor Tarver
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

12/15/92 6
