chips. Even if only a small portion of the chips fail, it will be a major problem. She said she has
been appointed to a committee by her employer to research the year 2000 problem. She gave
examples of potential problems. She said there are questions that need to be answered and the
answers should be posted to the Internet. She said the Internet has some excellent information
regarding the year 2000 problem.

Mayor Tarver appreciated her comments. He has been talking to staff about the same
issues. He said them is considerable information to read. It is a significant issue and the
community should be involved.

Ms. Acosta said staff is preparing a report to come back to the Council and it will be put on
the Internet when completed. She said the City is focusing on contingency plans as well, in case
things do not work the way they are supposed to. No one knows what is really going to happen.
The City is trying to find a good balance.

Carole Varela, 3858 Mohr Avenue, commented on the letter written by Becky Marshall.
She had many good things to say about Pleasanton, but Pleasanton also has problems. She refuted
comments by Jan Batcheller, a former president of the Chamber of Commerce. She also expressed
her concern for Mr. Nelson' s situation.

Jack Hovingh, 4250 Muirwood Drive, appreciated the comments made regarding
Portuguese Immigration Week, but felt other ethnic groups should also be recognized as well. He
also asked Council to appeal the Planning Commissions decision regarding Z-99-25, approving the
applicant's request to modify the window treatments. He felt the applicant should put up a bond
that would ensure that the project would be completed in a timely fashion.

Ms. Michelotti asked the procedure for appealing the Planning Commission' s decision.

Ms. Acosta said Council needed to indicate whether it wanted to appeal the decision.

Mr. Pico said the Council had taken no action on the consent item.

Ms. Acosta said that is correct, therefore Council would need to reconsider its prior decision
not to appeal the decision.

Pleasanton City Council 6 03/02/99
Minutes
