Mayor Tarver said the Council has authorized funding for the parade and the General Manager of the Fairgrounds has indicated that the Fair Board would be willing to fund up to $2000 towards the parade and will provide free admission to the fair for everyone who participates in the parade on June 26, 1999. He said the idea is to open the parade to as many people as have participated in the past. He wanted to thank the General Manager and the Fair Board for trying to help put together a parade and hoped it was possible. Ms. Acosta said the Council did authorize to fund up to $10,000 towards organizing a parade. She has had numerous conversations with people who say they are willing to participate. It is now just a matter of determining who will take the lead and move forward in organizing such an event. Mr. West said this is a matter that would need to go before the Pleasanton's Downtown Association. Craig Scharton, President of the Pleasanton Downtown Association, told him if the Association approves moving forward, he felt the event could be organized. Ms. Michelotti understood the Exchange Club is ready to continue its involvement. Charles Brydon, President of the Exchange Club, 10 Sheri Court, Danville, said the Exchange Club is ready to organize the parade. He only found out a month ago that the funding was deleted. He had asked to be notified formally regarding the funding. He said if the idea were to have a parade it would be a push to make it happen because the Club has lost a month. He said the Exchange Club should be in charge rather than have some other organization try and reinvent the wheel. Ms. Ayala understood that part of the $10,000 funded by the Fair Board, in previous years, went to the Exchange Club in order to fund the organization. Mr. Brydon said that is correct. Ms. Acosta said the funds from the City would be used only for direct parade expenses. Mayor Tarver said his idea was to try to organize a community event, get the people involved, improve the process and create a partnership. He hoped that the community would help in the process in making the event happen, so that in the year 2000 there will be no question that the Fair Board will reinstate the program and build on the event. Mr. Brydon said the parade has always been the kick off for the Alameda County Fair. If it could be broadly advertised, it would help increase the community involvement.
