the existing pipeline. The pipeline that was installed in 1996 can be used, but there is an additional pipeline that is beside the 1996 pipeline that will need to be removed or relined. Ms. Michelotti asked if there was any discussion regarding an alternative using a single pipeline for the entire length. Ms. Housen said the main focus was on the urban areas. Ms. Michelotti asked how the life expectancy ofrelining the existing pipeline compared to a new pipeline. Ms. Housen said if the lining is installed correctly it should extend the life expectancy of the pipeline to be the same as the life of a new pipeline. Ms. Michelotti understood the process to reline the existing pipeline was more expensive than it would be to install a new pipeline. Ms. Housen said yes. Mr. Pico asked her to explain what is happening with the change of alignment in Pleasanton. Ms. Housen showed slides regarding the realignment of the pipeline going through the City of Pleasanton and mentioned the possible impacts and solutions. Mr. Pico said this process could have a significant impact on the Stoneridge shopping mall depending upon what time of the year the project is constructed. Ms. Housen said the impacts to the shopping mall, Kaiser and other businesses are being considered. Ms. Michelotti asked if the pipeline running by the shopping mall was the dual pipeline or one pipeline? Ms. Housen said it is part of the dual pipeline. After the dual pipeline is put in, the existing pipeline would have to be relined. Relining this pipeline will impact the trees, but not as much as if a new pipeline were being installed.
