Ms. Michelotti appreciated the flowers and acknowledgements sent by all in regards to
her husband's recent medical emergency. She said he is recuperating fine.

Valerie Hurst, from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey Committee, gave a brief overview
of the steps taken in obtaining the "Pleasanton Youth Risk Behavior Survey". She said many
positive aspects appeared in the report. In almost every category, Pleasanton teens were at or
slightly below the national norm. In the area of exercise and health education, Pleasanton teens
scored above the norm. However, even though the scores are normal or above, the worst
possible thing would be to ignore any risky behaviors.

Carolyn Jennings, also from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey Committee, went over the
results of the "Pleasanton Youth Risk Behavior Survey." She said the Committee decided to
make some recommendations: 1) to administer the survey as soon as possible and then every
two years; 2) form a Youth Task Force comprised of representatives from the Youth
Commission, the Youth Collaborative, Human Services Commission, City Council, School
Board and administration, Youth Survey Committee members and at large community members
that would include representatives from businesses, ministry, mental and medical health. The
task force should work as equal partners to help implement a youth master plan. The system
will need paid staff and a professional facilitator to guide and support this task. The Committee
is looking for support of the plan to go forward in developing a master youth plan for
Pleasanton. The Committee will submit a written proposal in the near future of a plan that will
help lead and steer the task force.

Ms. Ayala commented she had attended the forum and press conference and was
impressed with the presentations done by the students. She thanked the Committee for its hard
work.

Mayor Tarver said he was glad to see this survey was finally being done. He was
looking forward to the Committee' s recommendations about how to address the issues that have
been identified.

Ms. Michelotti said this is a good way for the City Council, the School District, and
other groups to become involved with the youth in the community. She said the Youth
Collaborative Committee has done a wonderful job and thanked the members for their efforts.

David Wright, Civic Arts Commissioner, gave a presentation on the proposed art
sculpture for Centennial Park and described the process taken to determine the finalist. The
piece selected, Albus, means "white light from the sun" and was created by Diana Pompelly
Bates, a local artist. He explained the process now will be to get as many people involved in
getting reactions to the art work. The plan is to have presentations before the Human Services
Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Civic Arts Commission and then offer the art
work to service organizations for display. He expected to bring the recommendation back to
· - Council in January or February for a final determination. He asked if Council had any

Pleasanton City Council 12/02/97
Minutes 4
