Ms. Michelotti said if there was all the time in the world, site 18 would work, but the
new school needs to be built in a timely fashion.

Ms. Haugen thanked staff and committees that worked on this issue.

Ms. Ayala also thanked everyone.

Ms. McGovern added that the School Board and the City Council wants to address the
issue of overcrowding in schools as soon as it can and try to offer the quality of education that
the community is looking for. She said two new schools would be opening in the year 2000.

3. School Construction Update

Dennis Dunston showed slides of the new projects. He outlined all of the projects for
the next seven years or to buildout. He said the number of housing starts would greatly affect
the timing of the new schools. The timelines indicated are the best estimates depending upon
the rate of development. Also the District would like to stay in the State program as long as
possible to maximize the benefit of state funds. He said all of the K-5 schools include class size
reductions.

Someone from the audience asked how much would be paid for by developer fees?

Dr. McCurtain said projects funded by developer fees are the middle school, the new
elementary school on the San Francisco property, the growth additions to Lydiksen Elementary,
growth additions to Foothill High School, the new elementary school on Vineyard and the
growth additions to Amador High School. Everything else would be covered by other funds.
He said Mohr Elementary would have temporary portables for one year until the new structure
can be built. He said the land has been purchased to relocate the parking lot. The new
elementary and middle school will be built at the same time. As soon as the above projects are
completed then the process will begin to start the work on Foothill High School, the school on
Vineyard and Amador High School. If the School District is eligible and gets additional funding
then perhaps the elementary school might be able to open sooner.

Ms. Ayala asked if all the projects included fourth and fifth grade class size reduction.

Dr. McCurtain said this issue would be discussed as the construction and/or remodeling
occurs.

Ms. Ayala asked the School Board if this would be a consideration.

Joint Meeting 14 06/04/98
School Board/City Council
Minutes
