MINUTES
OF
THE
JOINT MEETING
OF
THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE
PLEASANTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

June 4, 1998

1. a. CALL TO ORDER

Vice Mayor Dennis called the Joint Meeting of the City Council and the Pleasanton
Unified School District to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance.

City Clerk Peggy L. Ezidro called the roll, which is recorded as follows:
Councilmembers present were Kay Ayala, Becky Dennis, Sharrell Michelotti, Thomas P. Pico,
Jr. School Boardmembers present were Clark Gunson, Juanita Haugen, and Cindy McGovern,
Patrick Kernan, Buster McCurtain, Deputy Superintendent and Bill James; Superintendent. Staff
members present were: Deborah Acosta, City Manager; Jim Wolfe, Director of Parks and
Community Services, Eileen Morley, Senior Supervisor; Brian Swift, Director of Planning; and
Bill van Gelder, Traffic Engineering.

Mayor Ben Tarver and School Boardmember Laura Bassett were absent and excused.
1.b. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Geoff Cooper, 7534 Flagstone Drive, asked if the School Board could establish
Pleasanton's specific standards. Not regarding where the City gets State funding but where the
City can say this is not the quality of education for the City of Pleasanton and communicate this
to City authorities to use in the decision making process for developments. Does the City want
to approve more developments even though the schools do not meet the State overcrowding
standards. He had a question regarding the traffic around the schools. He understood the buses
were not economical to run but he sees the traffic stack up around the schools. He would like
to see if something could be done to start running the buses again and encourage the students
to ride the buses. He mentioned the firearms control ordinance that had just been passed. He
suggested instituting a firearm safety program in the schools, with a cooperative venture between
the Pleasanton Police Department and the School District similar to the already existing "DARE"
program. He suggested having a joint City/School Board program to address this. Regarding

Joint Meeting 1 06/04/98
School Board/City Council
Minutes
