guns for safety. He cited incidents from the LA riots. But the responsibility starts with the
people. People should be educated on the use of guns and how to store gum safely in their
homes.

Lynn Warner, 6948 Cone Verde, said gun safety is taught to her children at home. She
felt it should be taught in the schools as well. She opposed the ordinance. She felt that the
economically disadvantaged citizens had a right to buy guns they could afford. She was
concerned with the attack on her constitutional rights. She said the criminals, not law abiding
citizens, should be punished severely.

Ms. Michelotti asked her opinion on trigger locks?

Ms. Warner did not support trigger locks.

Bob Thomas, Outdoor World, 3903 Santa Rita Road, felt Pleasanton did not warrant such
an ordinance because Pleasanton did not have a problem. He felt a law of this nature was an
emotional ploy by outside influences. The kinds of guns that could be sold to residents was very
limited. He said the laws of California protect the citizens who desire to own handguns. He
urged Council to pass on the ordinance because it was not needed in the City of Pleasanton.

Ms. Ayala asked if Outdoor World sold any of the guns listed on the roster?

Mr. Thomas said at the present time approximately four guns were being sold that might
fall within that category.

Ms. Ayala asked if such gum were banned from import to the United States in 1968.

Mr. Thomas said no guns that Outdoor World sold had been banned.

Ms. Ayala said the junk guns that the ordinance listed for banning were actually banned
from import to the United States in 1968. Since then the guns have been manufactured primarily
in Southern California. She asked if he had any facts on these manufacturers?

Mr. Thomas said he did not, but he would be happy to obtain the information from his
manufacturers. He said the ordinance ignored the fact that more and more women were buying
small handguns for protection.

Ms. Dennis asked if he knew how many different models of handgum were manufactured
for sale in the United States?

Mr. Thomas said he did not know.

Pleasanton City Council 5 02/09/98
Minutes
