Item 6f
School District/City LiaiSOn Committee

Ms. Ayala said the School District and the City have a Liaison Committee that meets
monthly. She gave a brief background of the Committee's functions and indicated that she and
Ms. Michelotti have been reappointed for the next year. The School Board has requested that
its members be rotated on a monthly basis. Ms. Ayaia felt the membership should be consistent.
The Committee meets at 7:30 a.m. and she feels considerable time would be spent updating the
rotating members each month. Her request is to have Council send a letter to the School Board
asking the Board to reconsider its decision to rotate members on a monthly basis.

Ms. Acosta clarified that the City and the School Board members in the past have rotated
members annually. Now the School Board is proposing to change its members monthly. She
also mentioned that with this rotation the Brown Act could be violated inadvertently by a serial
meeting.

Ms. Michelotti mentioned her concern that the proposed rotation could cause some
inconsistency. She stated that she had discussed the matter with luanita Haugen, Board
President, and had suggested perhaps rotating school board members every six months if it is
their desire to have more members participate. She reminded evryone that the two boards do
meet two or more times per year.

It was moved by Ms. Ayala, and seconded by Ms. Dennis, to direct staff to prepare
a letter to be signed by the Vice Mayor requesting the School Board to reconsider its
decision to rotate members on the Liaison Committee monthly.

7. MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL

Ms. Michelotti requested periodic reports from Council representatives on Boards and
Committees activities.

Ms. Dennis suggested having a regular schedule at the beginning of the Council meetings
for reports from the various committees.

8. CITY COUNCIL CALENDAR

9. CLOSED SESSION

The closed session was held at 6:30 p.m.

Pleasanton City Council 1/6/98
Minutes 12
