Public Comment
Fred Norman, addressed the City Council, thanked Councilmember Thorne for his presentation
for introducing and recognizing troops, felt it was wonderful that two Councilmembers do honor
the troops in Iraq and he asked for the entire Council's support. He asked the Council if they
would do something to stop the killing in Iraq of both American troops and innocent civilians.
Kathy Dowding, addressed the City Council, thanked Councilmember Thorne for a moment of
silence, said since the last Council meeting, 40 more American soldiers lost their lives, felt
Father's Day must have been a very sad day for many, and she read names of 39 soldiers into
the record, and said some names had not yet been released by the Defense Department.
Valerie Arkin, addressed the City Council, referred to the previous Council meeting where the
Council accused Planning Commission Chair Anne Fox for using her title in stating her opinions,
said the newspaper added her title without her consent and felt the Council should confirm facts
prior to making any untrue statements about someone.
Doug Miller, addressed the City Council, asked for the Council to discuss two items at the end
of the meeting under Matters Initiated by Council--1) At the last meeting Ms. Dowding asked for,
and was granted, unlimited time to read the names of Americans killed in Iraq. He felt others
were also risking their lives in locations other than Iraq, said Ms. Dowding's words, tone and
intent was an insult to all those who are serving in the military both past and present, felt the
soldiers should be remembered as heroes, and questioned whether or not the Council will
decide if the agenda item will become a permanent item or whether the Council will indicate that
the gesture was inappropriate. 2) He said in the past the Mayor has used her title to promote
her favorite global causes and the consensus of the discussion last year was that anyone
wishing to promote some policy on paid city business should first raise it to the full City Council
in advance for review and comment. He said the Mayor co-authored a resolution at an
upcoming meeting on Friday regarding nuclear weapons, felt she has shown contempt for the
Council and citizens and he asked the Council to either bless the resolution tonight or demand
that the Mayor her name and reference to Pleasanton be removed from the resolution.
Kurt Kummer, addressed the City Council, said as a Commissioner one of the worst things was
poor communications between staff, said the Chair of the Planning Commission has refused to
meet with staff, said the Mayor asked to hold a meeting with the Chair over two months ago,
said he attended a Planning Commission meeting one month ago where a large development
was discussed. The Chair continued the item, feeling that the meeting had not been noticed
properly. The item was continued and staff was blamed for the poor noticing, which he felt was
wrong. He asked Council to find something that could be done to address the situation.
City Council Minutes 5 June 19, 2007
