T
M I N U T E S
of
THE MEETING
of
THE PLANNING COMMISSION
Pleasanton, California
December 23, 1964
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Planning Commission was called to order at
8:00 P.M, on Wednesday, December 23, 1964, by Chairman Landon.
ROLL CALL showed the following;
Present: Commissioners Antonini
Johnston
Lozano
Chairman Landon
Secretary Fales
Absent: Commissioner Rega
Upon motion of Commissioner Lozano, seconded by Commissioner Antonini, the minutes
of the meeting of December 9, 1964, were approved as presented by unanimous vote.
The next item on the agenda was the application ofl'rank Auf der Maur, Santa Rita
Road, for a Zoning Permit in order to erect a sign in connection with the Alisal
Medical Center at 1400 Santa Rita Road. Mr. Fales, in giving the staff report,
pointed out that the glans as submitted do not show all the necessary dimensions,
such ae length and setback. Mr. Fales further stated it is difficult to determine
whether this application should be treated as an application fora sign or as an
application fora wall. It is a problem of interpretation of the Ordinance. The
question was raised concerning the length and total square footage of the sign, as
these dimensions were not shown on drawing submitted. Dr. Juhl, Mr. Auf der Maur and
Mr. Rickenbach were present in the audience. Dr. Juhl stated that the sign will be
20 feet long, with twelve names,ln other words, a 3'x20' sign with 3"x3" lettering.
Mr. Auf der Maur stated the reason for this type of sign was to allow it to be seen
from the street more readily than if it were attached to the building. After dis-
cussion by the Commission, Mr. Auf der Maur was instructed to make an application
fox a Variance. Dimensions of length, setback and total square footage are to be
shows on drawings submitted for the Variance. The Commission, with the consent of
the applicant, then continued this matter until the meeting of .7anuary 13, 1965.
The next item on the agenda was the application of Standard 011 Co. of California,
320 Market Street, Room 718, San Francisco, for a Zoning Permit with Site Plan,
Architectural and Landscape Approval in order to revise and expand an existing auto-
mobile service station located at the southeast corner of Main and Ray Streets. In
giving the staff report, Mr. Falea stated that the proposed use is a modernization
and enlargement of an existing service station. Presumably the existing station
would remain until the new construction was nearly complete and then be removed. Mr.
Fales pointed out that Livingston and Blayney have indicated the existing service
station would not be eliminated in the Central Business District plan. The Cuu®ie-
sion was reminded to carefully scrutinize the architec*_ural drawings of this pro-
posal to satisfy themselves that the new station will be pleasing to the eye and in
keeping with the downtown concept. The staff recommended approval of this applica-
tion subject to the following conditions: (1) Applicant make necessary arrangements
with property owner. to ccquire for the City, without cost to the City, the bit of
property requize3 for a 10-foot radius corner at Main and Ray Streets. (2) That
existing concrete sidewalk and curb and gutter that is determined to be sub-standard
be replaced with new sidewalk and curb and gutter constructed to City standards.
(3) The paved areas shall be constructed at least to the City's minimum standards
for parking areas. (4) A detailed landscaping plan be submitted and approved by the
City Engineer prior to issuance of a building permit. (5) A detailed site drainage
plan be submitted to and approved by the City Engineer prior to issuance of a build-
ing permit. (6) The plan for the Central Business District shows Main Street wider
than it really is 1n this area and questions the location of the pumping islands.
With two banks of pumps parallel to Main, at some future t+.:~e, these islands may have
to be moved to allow the widening of Main Street.
