Regarding the next item on the agenda, it was moved by Commissioner Rega, seconded
<br />by Commi.eaioner Johnston, and carried, that the application of Mre. Cheater Roeei,
<br />9838 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland, for a Zoning permit with Site Plaa, Architectural
<br />and Landscape Approval in order to construct multiple dwelling unite at 492 St.John
<br />Streee, in en RG-15 District, which had been continued from April 28, 1965, be
<br />continued to the meeting of May 26, 1965.

<br />Route 1, Box 404, Pleaeantoa, for a Zoning permit with Site Plen, Architectural
<br />and Landscape Approval in order to construct a car-wash facility on Lot 10, Vervain
<br />Ave, in a C-T District, which had base continued from April 28, 1965, be continued
<br />to the meeting of May 26, 1965.
<br />Mr. Campbell stated that the staff recommends the name "Schween Street" fora new
<br />proposed street weae of and parallel to Main St. which hen been submitted to the
<br />State on the Select Street Map, After discussion and consideration, it was moved
<br />by Commissioner Antonini, seconded by Commissioner Rega, and carried, that the
<br />Commission recommends to the City Council that the new street west of and parallel
<br />to Main St. be named "Schween Street", in honor of a family which has made a
<br />continuing and valuable contribution to the civic, social and cultural life of the
<br />comox:nity for several generations,
<br />Mr. Campbell seed a letter from Chris Beratlis to the Planning Commission, dated
<br />May 12, 1965, is which he stated that eight distance from the driveways of his
<br />property at 362 and 366 Christina Count ie inadequate when backing out due to the
<br />presence of his neighbor's fence which is within 5 ft. of the inner portion of the
<br />sidewalk and leaves a "totally blind" area. Mr, Beratlia ie concerned for the
<br />safety of children playing oa the sidewalk. Mr. Campbell explained that the
<br />adjacent property owner, Mr. Shamblin, appeared before the City Council on May 10,
<br />1965, and inquired ae to whether if he voluntarily moved the pre-existing fence
<br />mould he have to make it conform to the Zoning Ordinance. Mr. Campbell and Mr.
<br />Struthers agreed that this is a policy matter at this point, and the Commission
<br />ie not required to take any action; however, the staff should look into the matter,
<br />Mr. Beratlia has addressed to the City Council a letter similar to the one ad-
<br />dressed to the Planning Commission.
<br />Mr. Campbell explained that Mr. Falea' absence this evening was due to hie attend-
<br />ance at a County-wide meeting regarding the location of the AEC Accelerator at
<br />Camp Parka.
<br />Mr. Campbell announced that the public hearing before the Alameda County Board of
<br />Supervisors on the Volk-McLain and Church of Jeaue Chtiat of Latter Day Sainte
<br />rezoninge and amendment of the County General Plan has been set for Thursday,
<br />June 3, 1965, at 9 A.M., in the Board of Supervisors' Chambers, Oakland.
<br />The subject of street names was introduced, and Mr. Campbell stated that he and
<br />Commissioner Rega will be working on street names, Upon inquiry from Commissioner
<br />Johnston, Mr. Campbell said the present height of street signs is necessary for
<br />clearance. Mr. Ca~bell added that the n°w arrest aigna in Pleasanton are
<br />luminescent sad may be refurbished and brightened--these are superior to the older
<br />enamel aigas, Considerable discussion ensued regarding the desirability of en
<br />identifiable connection or theme for street names in a given area. Com,siaeio~r
<br />Johnston asked for clarification of the "Drive" and "Court" designation. Mr.
<br />Campbell explained that "Court" designates a dead-end street. The only instance
<br />when a court should bear the same name ae a street ie when it is an extension of
<br />a street of the seas name. At the conclusion of this diacueaion the following
<br />street name policy was agreed upon by the Commission: (1) Courts should bear the
<br />same name as a street only as nn extension of the street and using the same
<br />numberin;; no court should intersect a street of the same name, (2) Each area
<br />muse have an over-all theme for street names,
<br />There being no further business to come before the Commission, upon motion of Com-
<br />mieaioner Johnston, seconded by Covmteaianer Antonini, and carried, the meeting was
