M I N U T E S <br />of <br />TH8 PLANNING C~R~lISSION <br />Pleasanton, California <br />September 28, 1966 <br />The regularly scheduled meeting of the Planning Commission was called to order at <br />8:00 P.M., on Wednesday, September 28, 1966, by Chairman Antonini. <br />ROLL CALL showed the following: <br />Present: Commissioner Arnold <br /> Garrigan <br /> Johnston <br />Chairman Antonini <br />Absent: Commissioner Plato <br />Secretary Falea <br />Mr. Alan Campbell, Director of Public Works, acted ae <br />Secretary Pro Tem for this meeting. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Garrigan, seconded by Chairman Antonini, and carried, <br />the minutes of the meeting of September 14, 1966, were approved as presented by <br />unanimous vote. <br />Chairman Antonini opened the public hearing on the application of the Federal Sign <br />and Signal Corporation, 950 30th Street, Oakland, for a Variance from Section 10. <br />202, Ordinance No. 309, in order to allow installation of a sign in connection with <br />construction of a neighborhood shopping center located at the southwest corner of <br />Valley Avenue and Santa Rita Road, in a C-N District. It waa determined to cnnnide- <br />the Zoning Permit application on this matter at the same time. Mr. Campbell pre- <br />sented the staff report for both the Variance and the Zoning Permit application. <br />The staff report stated that the Variance application was for a free standing sign <br />on the property line on Valley Avenue at the Safeway Shopping Center. The Zoning <br />PermiC application was for four signs, either including the sign for which the <br />Variance is requested or an alternate. The staff report further stated that all of <br />the signs meet the requirements for area as outlined in the Zoning Ordinance for a <br />C-N District. The staff did question whether the sign for which a Variance was re- <br />quested was really necessary and felt that this could set a precedent for future <br />signs. In addition it was pointed out that provision for a sign post for identi- <br />fication of the center had been made in the site plan. With this in mind, the <br />staff recommended denial of the application. The staff recosm~ended approval of the <br />Zoning Permit for two flat identification signs plus two drive-in window signs. <br />Mr. Don Nelson representing Wells Fargo Bank was present in the audience and stated <br />that his firm felt the free standing sign was essential. Upon motion of Commiseiener <br />Garrigan, seconded by Commissioner Johnston, and carried, the public hearing was <br />closed. After further discussion, upon motion of Commissioner Arnold, seconded by <br />Commissioner Garrigan, the following resolution was adopted by unanimous vote. <br />RESOLUTION NO, 616 <br />WHEREAS, the application of the Federal Sign and Signal <br />Corporation, 950 30th Street, Oakland, for a <br />Variance from Section 10.202, Ordinance No. 309, <br />in order to allow installation of a sign in con- <br />nection with construction of a neighborhood shopping <br />center located at the aouthweat corner of Valley <br />Avenue and Santa Rita Road, in a C-N District, has <br />come before this Commission: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT <br />RESOLVED: that the above named application be denied. <br />After further discussion, upon motion of Chairman Antonini, seconded by Commissioner <br />Johnston, and carried, it was determined that the above named Zoning Permit be <br />approved for four signs. <br />
