Gale Wood, 1861 Greenwood, spoke in favor of this application. She
said she will be one of the adult supervisors of the game room.
George Pereria, 5791 San Juan Way, owner of Perry's Liquor store
spoke in opposition to the proposed use. He said he can visualize
additional vandalism, loitering, parked cars, and young people
bothering the customers more than they now do. He said signs get
rocks thrown through them. He said the police department doesn't
hear of all the problems because they simply do not call the police
any more as it has never done any good and has not improved the
conditions. He said in the last five years the police department
has been concerned with removing the 'riff-raff' frorn Main Street.
He then said there are days his clerks feel like they are taking
their life into their hands. He said if you say anything to the
young people they become belligerent and harass more. He said
the police have never done anything about this. He said they
either don't care or do not have the power of enforcement. He
further said he asked Mr. Cupples to fix the sign on Valley Avenue
for four years and it still isn't fixed. He said they have asked
him to put in lighting as originally installed. He said Mr.
Cupples doesn't like to spend money and he has just given up
trying with regard to the landlord and police department. He
said that all of the loitering on Friday and Saturday has been
detrimental to all of the businesses. He said women are afraid to
come into their store. He further said after the children spend
their $10 on games, they will be loitering in the shopping center
discouraging people from patronizing the stores. He further said
he doubted seriously that if the lady who spoke earlier could
handle loitering outside of the business. He said they have
attempted to run a clean business themselves and have had 14 year
old girls curse at their staff .when they failed to sell them
cigarettes. He said he is sorry some of the other proprietors
of business in the shopping center couldn't attend this public
hearing. He then said through letters they have voiced their
opinion in a negative way to Mr. Hirst's proposal.
Commissioner Wilson asked what kind of lighting the liquor store
has. Mr. Pereira stated there are four pole lights and even
when they are working, doesn't illuminate the parking lot. Com-
missioner Wilson asked that if the entire parking lot was well
lit would Mr. Pereira believe that the problems would be reduced.
Mr. Pereira acknowledged that lighting is part of the problem
but also part of the problem is that the police department has
been concentrating on Main Street.
-19-
