Commissioner Jamieson, while expressing sympathy for the plight of
the ambulance service, could not reconcile the concept of an ambulance
service in a residential neighborhood.
Commissioner Jamieson also asked about the required signing for a
home occupation. He felt that the lettering on the ambulance itself
was advertisement. Secretary Harris stated that the Planning Com-
mission is empowered to grant modifications to ordinance prohibitions
on signing.
Upon query from Commissioner Shepherd, Mr. Lee stated he intends to
back the ambulance onto a cement pad adjacent to the driveway.
Acting Chairman Wood asked how he felt about adding a driveway from
Mohr Avenue. The addition of the driveway would only reduce their
travel to 25 ft.
Commissioner Shepherd questioned the addition of such a condition
which principally involves the landlord.
Acting Chairman Wood ascertained there would be three full-time em-
ployees, two always on duty. He wondered how many personal vehicles
would be parked on the site.
Commissioner Jamieson asked Councilmember Mercer or Councilmember
Brandes about the previous discussion of locating the ambulance team
on public property, such as in one of the firehouses. Mr. Mercer
replied that their shifts did not coincide with those of the fire-
fighters. Mr. Brandes indicated that it was clear from Mr. Lee's
comments that the members are looking for a different environment
than which can be provided through living in a firehouse, since it is
their intention to make the quarters their residence as well.
Commissioner Shepherd felt that the addition of over strict conditions
would in essence, be a denial of the application. He felt the appli-
cant should be allowed an opportunity to work out the proposed con-
ditions with the landlord, and failing that, come back to the Com-
mission.
The Acting Chairman offered addition of the following conditions:
that a driveway and parking pad be constructed at the northeast corner
of the property; that the ambulance be stored on this parking pad at
all times when not in operation; that proper sight distance from the
driveway be maintained at all times; that no more than three personal
vehicles for the employees be stored on the premises at any time.
Commissioner Shepherd expressed preference for not having to attach
these conditions, but conceded it would be the best chance of approving
the permit for the ambulance service.
-3-
