Dr. Bear stated that storage was normally only for two <br />or three weeks as a matter of their company's policy. He stated the regulations <br />governing their operation allowed them to store this material for a longer <br />period of time. He further stated his employees are monitored for radiation <br />by radiation measuring devices which they carry on their person as well as <br />by film badges. He further stated that in 10 years in California they <br />have never had a problem with regard to contamination in their warehouses. <br />He stated that his company is much more conservative with regard to safety <br />than the law requires. He stated that the Public Health Service is scheduled <br />to inspect, at random, their operation on an annual basis, hpwever, this <br />inspection occurs much more frequently -- quarterly. Mr. Geppert addressed <br />the possibility of fires and asked whether or not there were any combustibles <br />or explosives stored on the premises. <br />Dr. Bear stated there are no explosives. Dr. Bear stated that the 7A 55 <br />gallon drums used for storage normally would remain sealed and the material <br />inside would not burn. Dr. Bear stated local fire departments are equipped <br />for fires but that they do supply, upon demand, special instructions to <br />fire departments. <br />Robert Pearson, 3590 Chucrh Ct., spoke stating he was a chemist by profession <br />and asked Doctor Bear to address the worst case that could happen especially <br />with the prevailing winds in the area. Dr. Bear explained. <br />William Kovac, 31?_4 Weymouth Ct., recommended consideration be given to the <br />downwind and upwind conditions for fire hazards. <br />The public hearing was closed. <br />Mr. Harris then cited a condition which Zone 7 wants imposed concerning <br />UP-78-34: "That the applicant review with Zone 7 of the ACFCU7CD the safeguards <br />that will be employed to prevent spillage of radioactive and chemical wastes <br />into the Alamo Canal. This review to take place prior to storing any <br />radioactive material on the site". <br />Mr. Doherty said it appears to him that reasonable men have taken reasonable <br />precautions f_or safety and he moved to approve UP-78-34. Mr. Geppert seconded <br />this motion. Mr. Wilson stated that the Police and Fire Departments are <br />understaffed and he would like to seethe appliant in a free-standing building. <br />Resolution ?~To. 1705 was then adopted approving UP-78-34 subject to the four <br />conditions outlined in the staff report plus the incorporation of Zone 7 request. <br />Ayes: Commissioners Geppert, Getty, Doherty and Chairman Jamieson <br />Noes: Commissioner Wilson <br />Absent: None <br />Abstain: None <br />UP-78-35, Pleasanton Dance Academy <br />Application of Pleasanton Dance Academy for a conditional use permit to allow <br />the operation of a ballet studio at 120 Spring Street.
