with regard to this props ty. Mr. Oakes responded.
As there was no further discussion, this matter was continued to March 12, 1980.
UP-80-1, Johnny and Sharon Dodson
Application of Johnny and Sharon Dodson for a conditional use permit which
would allow them to maintain 15 homing pigeons on their property which is
located at 4129 School Street. The property is zoned R-1-6500 (Single-Family
Residential) District.
Mr. Harris explained the staff report and made reference to a letter dated
February 11, 1980 from the Alameda County Health Care Services expressing
disapproval and listing conditions they would like to see if the pigeons were
allowed. Mr. Harris stated in view of the Health Department's letter and the
fact that three or four people have ofjected to the use he does not feel as
comfortable with the staff position as he did when it was prepared in favor
of the applicant.
Chairperson Doherty read the letter from the Alameda County Health Care Services
to the members of the audience.
The public hearing was opened.
John Dodson, the applicant passed out pictures showing structures in surrounding
yards which are higher than the pigeon coop in the Dodson backyard. He stated
he and his family are members of the Tri-Valley Pigeon Racing Association.
He stated there are 28 members of the club, three of which live in Pleasanton.
He stated that he now has 11 adult birds, one squab and one duck. He stated
the duck will be stuffed next week. He stated that he had no idea who com-
plained but that five pigeons as stated in the staff report are not enough.
Commissioner Wilson commented on the Health Department's letter recommending
10 pigeons and the City recommending five.
Mr. Dodson stated that he can muffle noise if that is a problem but that his
pigeons do not land on homes and that if they do you destroy them because
they are no good for racing.
Commissioner Leppert asked the applicant if he could get by with 10 pigeons
and Mr. Dodson responded he could.
Bill Lenson, 3767 Brockton Court spoke in behalf of the applicant urging
approval of the use permit application. He stated he is involved with 4-H
and children need projects of the sort--it helps eliminate loitering of the
children.
Mr. Warren Bream spoke supporting the application stating that the pigeons
in downtown have absolutely nothing in common with the pigeons raised for
racing. He stated his club has virtually eliminated the wild pigeons in
Danville and could possibly do the same thing for Pleasanton. He further
stated racing pigeons are bred once a year.
Commissioner Jamieson asked if the pigeons were exercised daily. Mr. Bream
stated his are usually exercised once a week and that pigeons are trained to
return directly to their coop.
-5-
