PUD-80-6, Golden Gate Racquetball Courts
Application of Golden Gate Racquetball Courts for development plan
approval of a 33,920 sq. ft. racquetball facility on a 1.23 acre site
at Old Hopyard Road just south of I-580. Zoning for the property
is PUD (Planned Unit Development) District. A negative declaration
of environmental impacts will also be considered.
Mr. Harris presented the staff report.
Commissioner Getty stated she has a problem with cars going through
Burger King parking lot. Mr. Harris stated that the Old Hopyard
Road driveway will probably be the main point of access.
Commissioner Lindsey asked that when the facilities are full, if 60
parking spaces would be sufficient. Mr. Harris stated that 63 spaces
may not be enough for cars but that the shortfall shouldn't be great
and there is quite a lot of street parking and will be parking avail-
able in adjacent lots at night. Commissioner Jamieson asked what
kind of parking there should be. Mr. Harris stated there are no
standards for this type of use. Mr. Harris gave the numbers of cars
at various hours for other facilities of Golden Gate Racquetball.
He stated the peak hours are 6:OOpm-9:OOpm.
Chairperson Wilson addressed the possibility of using the building for
other business and possible parking consequences should the racquetball
club be terminated.
The public hearing was opened.
Howard Wasserteil, 294 Junipero Common, Fremont (the applicant),
stated that they probably would need no more than 40 spaces for parking
from 6:OOam-4:OOpm with their peak hours being 6:OOpm-10:00pm. He
stated that occasionally there is a tournament but that they are on
the weekends and not during the weekday. Commissioner Getty asked
if the 1000 racquetball memberships were interchangeable with their
other facilities. Mr. Wasserteil stated that the facilities are 30-45
minutes apart and generally members did not exercise this privilege.
He stated they plan to draw members from Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon
and Livermore.
Commissioner Lindsey asked if Mr. Wasserteil had any problems with
the conditions and Mr. Wasserteil stated only with a portion of
condition #1 concerning the width of the planter on the north side.
He stated he would prefer some latitude in this regard because of
space limitations.
Mr. Harris inquired about membership of the Fremont facility. Mr.
Wasserteil explained there are about 900 racquetball members and the
cut off would probably be about 950. Mr. Harris inquired about the
health club membership and Mr. Wasserteil stated it is about 50o to
capacity. Mr. Harris then inquired as to the maximum Pleasanton would
-6-
