MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
10/12/83
Page 9
Ms. Mohr didn't like commercial on the east side of the street
either.
Roger Nerton, 462 St. Mary Street, spoke in opposition to the
land use change. He stated that the previous speakers have
expressed his concerns. He said for five years they have been
trying to make the west side of Peters commercial and he is
and has been totally against it. He said that when the general
plan change for Amaral was considered, he was out of town and
was unable to voice an opinion. He felt the City should hold
to their promise of keeping the west side residential.
Robert Cordtz, owner of property at 246, 248, 262 and 269 W.
Angela addressed the Commission. He was in opposition to the
proposed change. He indicated there is a proposal underway to
develop all of the properties between Peters Avenue and the Fairgrounds
into a parking area. Commissioner Getty said she has never heard
of this before. The staff also stated they have never heard of
such a thing. Commissioner Getty asked if Mr. Cordtz didn't
think there would be better control if the property was zoned
commercial. Mr. Cordtz said there is no need for any more offices
in downtown Pleasanton. Commissioner Getty pointed out that
there is only one vacancy in downtown.
Chairman Jamieson asked Mr. Cordtz his preference with regard
to a one story office building or two story high density apartment
house. He said he would prefer the residential use. Commissioner
Getty asked Mr. Cordtz if he lived in one of the houses on Angela.
Mr. Cordtz indicated he lived in San Ramon but that his sons
live on the property in Pleasanton.
Tom Nerton, said he has lived in Pleasanton 60 years. He said
there used to be three big department stores and restaurants
in the area. He said there are now many real estate offices,
less retail and many people in the real estate business. He
said he has lived in his house for 37 years and the City at
one time wanted to put parking on his property; then they placed
a plaque on the home stating it is 100 years old and he couldn't
tear it down if he wanted to. He recommended that Peters Avenue
be left as it is.
Mr. Shaper then asked about Chairman Jamieson about his theoretical
comparison of a two story high density unit vs. a one story
office. He stated it could just as easily be a two story office
and a single story residential unit.
Commissioner Getty said she has lived in Pleasanton 18 years
and there were 4500 people in town when she came. She said
there have been a lot of changes. She said everyone knows her
concerns with the downtown and residential areas. She said
her family also has spent a lot of money in the area benefitting
the downtown because they liked the community.
-9-
__..~.__.T..r........ _ „ ...... ......... ..... ...,.r.a.. ~... ._._. .... _........__.. ..._r.. .... ...... ... .. _.~. ...
