BACKGROUND
The Community of Character Coalition was formed in 2002 as a committee of
volunteers representing the City of Pleasanton, the Pleasanton Unified School District
(PUSD), the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and other organizations working
together to create a community culture built on values, goodwill and six foundational
character traits: compassion, honesty, responsibility, respect, integrity and self-
discipline. For the past five years, the Coalition has been working through the City, the
Chamber and PUSD to promote these character traits and incorporate them into
ongoing programming and activities.
The goals of the Community of Character Coalition are to:
• Endeavor to gain the support of our community leaders in modeling and
promoting good character
• Learn how character is built into the lives of individuals and adopt character
initiatives that apply to each segment within our community
• Strive to establish a community culture that encourages, recognizes, and
rewards good character
• Emphasize character, not achievement, since achievement with excellence, by
its very nature, requires good character
• Evaluate every decision, policy, and law on the basis of whether it rewards good
character or promotes bad character
• Assess all of our activities on a regular basis to ensure we are making progress
toward our goal of becoming a community known for the good character of its
citizens.
DISCUSSION
Over the past year, new leaders emerged within the committee. Motivated by a desire to
have the Coalition become an independent organization, these committee leaders have
been working with City staff to complete the necessary elements to become a non-
profit, 501(c)3 corporation. The newly structured organization has been named the
Pleasanton Community of Character Collaborative (PC3) in recognition of the shared
partnerships that support the Community of Character philosophy.
As noted in the newly created Bylaws of PC3, the Board of Directors will be comprised
of nine to eleven members with one person affiliated with each of the Pleasanton
Chamber of Commerce, the City of Pleasanton, and the Pleasanton Unified School
District, as well as six to eight persons who are at-large community leaders. These at-
large members will represent various community segments including non-profit
corporations, the faith community, sports groups and service organizations, as well as
age, gender, and other factors that provide for a diverse board of directors.
The City has been asked to appoint a representative to the Pleasanton Community of
Character Collaborative. As Council member Jerry Thorne has been actively attending
and participating in Community of Character Coalition meetings and activities for the
past few years, the mayor recommends that Council member Thorne be appointed as
the city's representative to the Community of Character Collaborative.
