Michael Manwaring, Graphic Designer for the project, also
represented the application. He spoke of the color and design
of the project, stating that they wish to relate to the existing
Myers Center. He pointed out the promenade, showed the proposed
colors of yellow ochre with a hint of green, and thought the
Mediterrean style of architecture would fit well with the
existing structures. He pointed out the columns, the grillwork
and the sunbursts on the columns. He showed where the large
expanse of glass would be in the structure, giving much light.
Jack Munson of Fee Munson Ebert, 25D Second Street, San
Francisco, spoke further regarding the window mullions which
would allow much light. He pointed out that at a certain paint
the grillwork would become trellises for plants. The towers
with the sunbursts on top are to be installed to distinguish
between the different buildings.
Commissioner Hovingh asked Mr. Munson what was the length of the
project from end to end. Mr. Munson said about one-quarter of a
mile. Commissioner Hovingh thought that was an extremely long
way for shoppers to walk back and forth to the parking area.
Commissioner Tarver noted that staff's problem seemed to center
around the use of "L.A. glitz." Mr. Munson said he did not know
what that meant, but stated that they were trying to design
something rich and beautiful. He felt the palm trees were
typical of this area and stated they were trying to offer
identit~,r and openness by using them in the project.
Commissioner Hoyt said he had no problem with the palm trees,
but felt the linear look was not attractive. He felt things
were too uniform.
Commissioner Hovingh questioned Mr. Munson as to the height of
the overhangs. He responded that they vary from seven to ten
feet .
Commissioner Mahern asked about the height of the towers.
Mr. Munson said they are about 33 f eet high. Commissioner
Mahern asked him to point out where the signs will be placed.
He did so.
Commissioner Tarver asked Mr. Swift what difficulties they are
having with the project. Mr. Swift said they are searching for
a theme that will coordinate color and design. He agreed that
the existing theme shows a rich tone, but does not fit in with
the existing center.
Chaffrrnan Michelotti
tonight, but that the
Stanley Rathbone,
delivery men might
for four buildings,
extensively.
stressed that no action will be taken
staff simply wanted more input.
~~5 Ray Street, expressed concern that
have some difficulties with only two docks
and that hand-trucks would have to be used
Forge 3
