MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION_MEMBERS <br />There were none. <br />OLD_BUSIN~SS_ _Public_Hearings <br />RZ-B8_11_City_of_Pleasanton <br />Application of the City of Pleasanton to amend the Municipal <br />Code relating to provisions for secondary dwelling units in <br />residential Districts. <br />Mr. Swift presented the staff report, asking that the Commission <br />give staff some input regarding the general direction an <br />ordinance should take. Staff would then recommend a combination <br />of regulations to meet the anticipated goal. <br />The public hearing was opened. <br />Tim Thornton, 43Q Adams Way, stated that he is interested in <br />obtaining a permit to build a "granny" unit. He stated he has <br />an attached four and one-half car garage that he would like to <br />convert about one-half into a dwelling for his parents. He has <br />a large lot and felt it would be suitable. <br />Chairman Micheletti asked Mr. Swift what the ruling is on units <br />of that nature. Mr. Swift explained the ruling as it presently <br />exists, noting that the April 1987 revised State law governing <br />second units was Less restrictive than the previous one. He <br />said there have been very few requests of this nature and it <br />would take a little time to work out the details. <br />Chairman Micheletti suggested that Mr. Thornton visit with the <br />Planning Department to see what they could work out. <br />Dale Ramey, 49x9 Forest Hill Drive, stated that he has a corner <br />lot and has lived there for 2D years. He said he has a <br />tri-level home and because of his wife`s health he would Like to <br />build a unit in the back for he and his wife, and have his son <br />live in the main house. <br />Chairman Micheletti asked if he wanted it separate or attached. <br />He stated the yard was of different levels so it might have to <br />be separate. <br />Commissioner Mahern asked if he had submitted an application to <br />build a unit. Mr. Ramey said he had not. <br />The public hearing was closed. <br />Commissioner Mahern stated she supports the idea of a second <br />unit in theory and felt that a number of people might need help <br />with elderly parents; however, she expressed concern that <br />secondary units might cause problems regarding parking, <br />services, etc. She felt that the quality of life in a <br />Page 2 <br />
