ValleyCare Health System
Community Benefit Report FY 2005-2006
ADDITION OF PHYSICIAN SPECIALTIES BASED ON COMMUNITY
NEED
ValleyCare has taken a proactive review of the Healthcare needs of fhe community in
the Tri-Valley through researching the growing needs as they arise. With an increase
in laparoscopic surgeries being performed in 2005/2006, the need for ageneral/
laparoscopic surgeon became evident. Additional needs included a urologist and a
gastroenterologist. ValleyCare recruited and added physicians in all three specialties by
mid-2006.
ValleyCare management also noted a shortage of primary care physicians in the Tri-
Valley, and is expecfed to continue in the future based on the Physician Need
Assessment of 2005 and 2010 prepared by Cattaneo & Stroud in August 2005 for
ValleyCare's service area.
Future physician recruitment includes a second cardiac surgeon, and an equipment
grant to ensure that a corneal surgeon is added in 2007.
CARDIOI~ASCULAR SURGERY PRQGRAM
During the spring of 2005, ValleyCare began pursuing the feasibility of developing a
cardiovascular program. Calendar year 2005 inpatient data supports a growing need in
the Tri-Valley for these services in the next five years:
Growth % Growth
2005-2010 2005-2010
S ecialt Dischar es' Da s
CARDIOLOGY 23.3% 23.5%
OPEN HEART 25.3% 24.3%
THORACIC SURGERY 22.4% 25.7%
VASCULAR 25.1% 25.7%
Several factors support adding this specialty to ValleyCare. Specifically, local
demographics are favorable with substantial population growth projected in the Tri-
Valtey abng with the aging of the population, there is no current total competition that is
seen as a center of excellence, and there is strong support of many of the focal medical
community, especially the cardiologists based at ValleyCare.
' Solucient Market Planner Plus CY 2005 I/P Demand DRG Fstimales
11
