The construction contractor, Jensen Corporation of Cupertino, has completed all of the
planned improvements with the exception of the soccer goal-storage area (located
outside of the field area), and is currently correcting minor punch list items. The first
mowing of the new turf will occur soon. The perimeter construction fence will be kept in
place until the new turf is hearty enough to be opened for use -currently estimated for
late August 2007.
The original construction contract was in the amount of $1,096,888. At completion, it is
estimated that change orders totaling approximately $32,000 will be issued, bringing the
total construction cost to $1,101,000.
Valley Avenue Extension -The extension of Valley Avenue, from Laguna Creek Lane
to Case Avenue, was a condition of the development of the Bernal Property. The
developers of the Bernal Property, Bernal Investment Group, consisting of Greenbriar
Homes, KB Home, and SouthBay Development, have spent approximately $8M for the
design and construction of this infrastructure. A major portion of the roadway extension
includes the construction of a railroad bridge so that Valley Avenue can pass under the
Union Pacific Railway tracks running just behind Pleasanton Middle School and Phoebe
Hearst Elementary School. When complete, the railroad undercrossing will be similar to
the railroad undercrossing at Bernal Avenue.
The extension of Valley Avenue includes the installation of a new traffic signal at the
intersection of Valley Avenue and Case Avenue. It has been anticipated that the Valley
Avenue extension will be open to the public in March, however, the opening of Valley
Avenue will be predicated on two remaining items as described below.
The first remaining item of work is to assure that the new traffic signal at Case and
Valley is operating properly and is fully functional, and assuring that the activity of
crossing guards at the school is coordinated with the new signal operation.
The second item to be resolved before the opening of the Valley Avenue undercrossing
is to assure that the storm water pumping system required at the underpass is fully
functional with back up systems in place. During construction, high groundwater was
encountered (higher than anticipated in the original design.) Without the pumping
system in operation, groundwater will flood the roadway at its lowest point. The City is
currently working with the developers, BIC, to assure that back up systems are in place
to preclude future flooding of the roadway. This item may delay the opening of the
roadway by at least one month.
Respecffu~y submitted,
/ _~ ~
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
Jahn ~ .
