• Recruit high-quality fast casual dining restaurants that would serve local workers at <br />lunch and dinner. This category fits the niche between fast food and white <br />tablecloth, sit down restaurants, and is especially popular currently in the restaurant <br />industry. Depending on needs of the particular restaurant, new fast casual dining <br />establishments could locate in existing retail centers and/or new mixed-use <br />developments. <br />^ Work with neighborhood-serving shopping center owners and tenants to strengthen <br />the mix of local serving retail options. Monitor market conditions and identify missing <br />retail store types. <br />^ Review sales tax data for existing shopping centers and retailers on a periodic basis <br />to monitor the vitality of the retail sector. Where sales trends show declines, pro- <br />actively engage retailers and property owners to identify potential roles for City <br />support. <br />^ Review City procedures for purchases of goods and services. Where bids are not <br />required, emphasize a strong preference for buying local whenever possible. Where <br />bids are required, pro-actively identify qualified local suppliers and notify them of <br />opportunities to bid. <br />• Explore implementing local merchant support programs similar to the San Francisco <br />Small Business Development Center. <br />• Explore the possibility of a local bank issuing a "Shop Pleasanton" credit card with <br />incentive programs for local spending. <br />^ Initiate a study to understand how to connect entertainment and shopping/retail <br />activities, with a focus on downtown Pleasanton. <br />24 <br />
